Why so much free time you ask? I'm just doing my work quicker then the speed of which they are given to me.

My job is to push out documents, receive documents, and make changes to technical drawings. When my coworkers can only give me 10 or so documents to push out per hour, and if I work my balls off I can push out 20 documents out, it leaves me with some time to burn. And with the quality issue, I don't actually need to rush anything to win myself free time. Hell I pick out mistakes I find in drawings and documents.

Keep in mind though this dosen't happen everyday, there might be days where I'm absolutely swamped with stuff such as a huge proposal or document retrieval day.

That being said though, we USED to have another person in my position that would also surf the web and do her own thing... and JUST THAT.
You give her any sort of work and she would shove it on the side and wait for later. She was gone in a week after I was hired on as part time to replace her full time work.

i dont mind the occasional surfing but when this becomes a habit, just like what you said with that ex coworker of yours, then it becomes a problem... i work hard and smart but when people pass their shit to me asking me for help coz their 'busy' and i catch them facebooking or playing games then i would call them out...

and like i said if it comes to the point where people will be laid off, and it was a choice between you or someone who works hard like you minus the surfing the net during business hours, don't make it an easy choice for the company! thats my take on it...

i dont think you one can be lazy and efficient and still be valueable...your basically cancelling each other out...

CP.AR 07-27-2011 11:12 PM

I agree - if slacking off takes priority over getting work complete - you're sacked.

I think where our point of view differs is the time spent on work vs. the average time spent to complete work.

Please don't take this offensively, I just want to explain the perspective of which I'm coming from.
Spoiler!

The worst is finding something really funny and trying to laugh quietly or contain it

When'd anyone say anything about being lazy?
Completing work faster is not lazy. In fact, I'd say that's efficient.

They're assigned a job, they do it in 20 minutes or an hour. Any extra work they want to do or not do is up to the individual.

Why would a company lay off someone who gets their work done faster? In fact, logically, it's the people who are spending more time on the same amount of work that would be laid off first.

JesseBlue 07-28-2011 07:37 PM

when a company lays people off, they dont even look at the positives...theyll look at the negatives and use that as the excuse to choose you...

ive been on the side that i work really smart/effiient/fast and i still got laid off...and when you see people who worked fast for a little bit and then surfed the net the rest of the time, like i said, it ticks me off...

working fast for a little bit does not equate to efficiency

If I'm done my work for the day... there's absolutely no point for me to stay... I'll just go home after a 6 hour shift and stay for a 10 hour shift on the next day that I need to stay late on a day with higher workloads.

I'm lazy, and I'm still valuable. Efficiency has nothing to do with it. As long as I meet the deadlines, I'm good. That's what it's like being the main guy in IT.

Feels like I'm in the reverse hyperbolic time chamber when I'm on RS checking out the build threads. Time went faster and I got late on my date.

Meeting deadlines is the main thing. I do slack off here and there, but being the main CAD guy in my office, I can finish drawings faster then you can mark them up and give them back to me.

Time managament & organization are keys things to have. Spend your time wisely, and you can always make free time for yourself.
