Shots for Puppies
 

Hey everyone! I've been looking into some puppies and am wondering how I would go about getting shots for them. Where did you guys go for their 1st, 2nd or 3rd shots? Also what is included in these shots exactly?

Any other tips for a 1st time buyer would be great as well, thanks!

shots wise...atlas vet on fraser is pretty cheap...ONLY go there for shots...do NOT go there for anything else -.-

had my dog neutered there and man..he had 3 fking wounds...
my dog only had one testicle that dropped into his sac...the other one was still somewhere near his tummy so they had to open it up and grab the other one...they cut him open and missed/couldnt find it so they had to cut open another wound...i was SOOOOOO pissed

anyways yea...shots are fine there :P never go to lansdowne vet on alexandra for ANYTHING...SUCH a ripoff

oh btw try not to let your dog out until his 3rd shot is done or he'll have a high risk of catching diseases and get sick or what not

1st time buyer...buy all the puppy stuff before bringing the puppy home...get a kennel that is small enough to make him feel safe but big enough so he can turn around. Put a stuffed animal in there and hide a clock in there somewhere..the ticking noise sounds like it's mother's heartbeat so he won't be as scared or nervous

oh and when you go to the vet (whichever one) or when you register your dog...try to see if you can grab a shots checklist so you can keep track of all his shots

MOST IMPORTANTLY, buy insurance.

Thanks for the quick reply! I've heard of the clock trick before and will probably end up doing that along with a hot water bottle. Do you know of any vets in the Tri-Cities are as well? Also what am I going to be looking at for costs for the shots? I've been seeing different prices everywhere I look.

if i remember correctly...they were roughly $20-30 dollars...the price varies from shot to shot... i remember getting my dog's first shot at lansdowne vet..the bill came to $90!!

i only brought my dog to lansdowne vet & atlas...so i can't really tell you much about the other ones...sorry! (my dog is still a pup - 1 year old, so i'm still learning as well :P)

So have you decided what dog you're gona get yet?

I had found a great boxer pup who had all the shots already but someone ended up picking it up before I could. I went and took a look at a rottie/mastiff cross today and am going to go through all the procedures and if all is well I will probably pick it up. I got to take a look at the mother as well and they're very nice dogs.

ooo i have a boxer too! i got him from a breeder right across the border...(the wife is an american vet, and the husband is canadian)..they breed boxers. I got mine for $800. If you don't mind the drive and hassle, have you looked into buying from the states?

Actually I didn't even think of that. How was it in terms of paper work and such to bring across? Were there any extra costs?

the breeders had all the paper work in hand. They had the puppies' birth certificates and registered them with american kennel association.

When we crossed the border with my puppy sleeping in my lap the officer never asked about him or asked for the paper works so no there weren't any costs.

The breeder should be able to tell you which shot he has and which ones will be needed.

Be aware that some vets do oversell you thing you won't need.

I have rabies, bordetella, DA2P (parvo), etc. for mine and those are pretty basic.

You've ever owned puppies before? Make sure you whip him into shape right away. I'd recommend the Cesar Millan's Mastering Leadership series.

do your research and make sure you are ready for a puppy. Just like taking care of a baby, but easier.
Research the breeds you like.

I say this b/c I hear too many stories of ppl wanting a puppy only to find that it is too much for them to handle and they have to give it up.

I picked up a rottie/pitbull cross and he's a lazy guy so far lol. Still his first day so he's getting used to it all. I'll post pics when I have them up!

for puppy shots they are pretty standard. I try to pass more time between them as I find this has helped in their health. I do not do Bordettela as I have found my dogs that have had the vaccine end up getting kennel cough when the dogs I don't give it to don't, and as I show them they are around alot of different dogs. Unfortunately some kennels do require it for you to be able to board a dog with them, but you can always get it done then if needed.

Puppy shots are a standard price, it's the visit cost that is different from vet to vet. Use a vet that you are going to stick with as the puppy shots are a good time for the vet to see the pup when they are healthy. That way if anything were to happen they can see the difference.

I agree, same here. If possible, I also try to schedule it so that my dogs don't get different vaccines done on the same day as it stresses and bogs the immune system down. Sometimes that's not possible as not all vets carry single vaccines, but you can always ask in advance. As a rule of thumb, I personally never do rabies on the same day as any of the other shots.
