Anyone familiar with electrical wiring for RJ14 phone plug?

This is an RJ14

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...to-RJ11-MF.jpg

I wired it up correctly, but still nothing. I want to connect my router and its better to try than to pay 90$ an hour to some telus schnob. I am getting no DSL signal and just hope my wires are bad at the end.

I was wondering if anyone knows how I can use a multimeter to check if the wires are good. I have a feeling some of them are just not live. Anyone know which wires should be oc and which should be sc? Voltage/current/resistance readings? Or even point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Why do you have to pay if your internet is down? If their service went down on you, shouldn't they pay for it without charging you for sending out a tech?

telus is a bunch of scums. They usually charge when they sent out techs to my business when they messed up my phone lines too...

Plug it into a phone. Do you get dial tone?

asian_XL 08-03-2011 05:01 AM

Telus = Fail

First off what did you wire the cord or the jack ? The Signal is only coming in on the center two pins of the cord, so the red/green. If you opened the jack there should be red and green wires coming out and connecting to binding posts. If the wire in your wall is the red/green/yellow/black just match the colors. If it is cat3/5 the dial tone should be on the white/blue so you would connect that to the red/green of the jack.

If you put a voltage meter on the pr you should see 48-52 volts DC, if you dont see that then you most likely need to call telus. If you only have internet you can still plug a phone in as well, you will hear a message that says "Sorry this is a restricted phone you are using...."

If you have a signal to the modem and still are not getting sync, most commonly your port has not been connected in the field/office or you have a filter on your line in the box on the side of your house. Also make sure the inline filters are not on the cord for the modem. Look around the house and check for a double phone jack, that is usually an indication of a filter outside and your dsl would most likely be in the bottom jack.

if its 90$ my buddy works at telus installing this shit and he'll hook you up for 50$ :troll:

shenmecar 08-03-2011 09:26 AM

buy a new cable?

sebTeggy 08-03-2011 02:33 PM

well everything seems to be working except the god damn router.

I have 52 volts in line 1 (blue with white dash and white with blue dash, AKA red/green)

http://i.dslr.net/pics/faqs/image4084.gif

I never heard of just needing line 1 (2 wires total) to have voltage. The rest of the wires are DEAD! Nothing on them at all. It would make sense that I could use only 2 wires for internet.... But still no DSL light on my router. Any other tips? Do I need voltage in 2 pairs of lines (4 wires) or is 1 pair (2 wires) enough? Double checking

Good job so far, 2 wires is all you ever need for voltage, it is just the difference between them you are measuring. So you 100 percent have a connection back to line equipment in the Central office. Your next step is to open your box on the side of the house and check for a filter. If there is not one in there then you need to call telus. If there is one some wiring would need to be changed around or the filter would need to be taken out. There is no billing for outside issues.

This seems incredibly complicated for a DSL connection.

You know you can get Telus people to come and fix it without paying them, right? Just threaten to cancel. Hell, I call Telus once a year just to yell at them and get free shit. I only pay for my DSL about 6 months out of the year every other year. It's better business to retain customers than to acquire new ones...and they certainly don't want to lose a customer of 15+ years like me. If you've been with them for more than a couple years, just call and say if this isn't fixed, you're going to Shaw.

Also...if the extent of the problem is enough for you to have to rewire stuff, then that's probably some poor work on their part. The most you should be expected to do is buy a new cable or press the on button. What you're doing now is clearly not your responsibility and Telus should be fixing the problem. You're paying for the service and you're not getting it. Go and yell at them. Refuse to pay anything, threaten to cancel or if you really want to stick it to them...call the news and tell them that Telus is fucking you.

Most of the time an adsl repair is done without charges. However, telus only owns the wiring up to the demarcation point on the side of the house. All wire past that point is customer owned and if there is issues on it there could be billing to replace it. If he ordered the internet with a self install instead of paying for someone to come out and set it up there is no way for telus to know what is going on with the wire in the house. It happens all the time when a previous tenant has shaw telephone service. Shaw connects their equipment to the inside wire and disconnects the telus drop. Telus does not get notified by shaw that this is the case so in their records it still shows as a software only install. Then when a new tenant or owner moves in their stuff does not work. This situation can not be blamed on them as it is out of their control.

Honestly i would call telus, you seem like you want to fix it yourself but it will probably be quicker to call in. You can try what i said and look in the demarcation box for a filter but thats about the extent of what you can try.

It's kind of weird seeing work bleed over to personal.

edit: I doubt people on RS know the purpose of a demarc.

JesseBlue 08-03-2011 08:26 PM

good job silva95teg!

Hopefully some do now, same as their hydro meter is the demarc for power, and the gas meter is the demarc for fortis. People just expect tel/cable cos to fix everything inside for free. BC hydro and Fortis won't even touch past their demarc. As far as I see on a customer service level a lot of inside work gets fixed by telus and shaw for free to keep customers happy. There is a difference in that hydro and gas are monopolies and tel/cable compete for customers.

Yeah well the problem is the WIRING inside the house. At least I think. Supposedly they are supposed to send a tech over to remove some filter but the people on the phone told me that it has already been removed.

I might just switch to shaw. Fuck telus. I have to be home between 8am-5pm tomorrow to wait. Seriously? And the best they can do is 'a 10 minute heads up'.

But thanks for the tips. This thread was more towards wanting to know how everything is wired up. Hopefully this is resolved tomorrow. Thanks guys

EDIT: To whoever gave me the 48-52 volt reading, thanks! Helped me out quite a bit.
