Cleaner Wax question.

I bought a 96 civic EX not too long ago. Although the body is in pretty good shape, and there is no rust, the paint is very dirty.

By dirty, I mean the paint no longer feels smooth, it feels porous. It also picks up dirt and debries, and normal washing will not remove it. Its almost as if the dirt has stained the paint in areas like the trunk lid.

So what do I do to clean it? Will a simple cleaner wax (mothers, turtle, Mcquires) work? Its a daily, and not really looking to spend the
dollars on a pro job. Are the cleaner waxes (will be applying and removing by hand) the best option, or is there somthing else off the shelf I should be looking at?

first wash your car then clay bar, and use a cleaner wax after..I use mothers cleaner wax btw

I apply the cleaner wax by hand..but you can get a buffer if you want..doing it by hand is good enough unless you want to spend some cash on a buffer

I have never tried a clay bar, although I have done some reading on them.

Suggestions for a newb on brand to try? SOmthing off the shelf at crappy tire or such would be best.

mothers or meguiars would do the job

i don't know about other locations, but last week, richmond costco had the mother's claybar kit for about $8, which is less than half the price you'd pay at canadian tire.

As mentioned, wash and clay for sure for starters. The OTC clays are pretty mild. If you find they don't get everything off, let me know and we can set you up with something a bit more aggressive.
