There's a new authentic Mexican place in Poco right off the Mary Hill and Broadway. I had the Chicken enchilada with Mole sauce and it was wicked.

Not really "hidden gems," but these are independent places that I frequent.

Malaysian food: Hawkers on Main/King Ed. All dishes ~$5.

Sandwiches: Hububb on Hornby between Robson and Smithe.

Vietnamese: Pho Tan on Main/30th. #38 is life changing.

Talay Thai on South Granville. Family owned and operated. My favorite Thai joint in Vancouver.

I can vouch for this one. My gf and I stumbled by it by accident and we still go back every now and then :D

Alright, I'll play.

Pupusas los Guerreros

Pupusas for $2/each at the back of a Latin American grocery store at Kingsway & Joyce. Hand made, fresh to order, I suggest ordering by phone and coming to pick up, otherwise you'll get hungry just standing there smelling these babies on the griddle.

&

Accord Food House

Reason: Not exactly at the top of ones mind when they think TW Beef Noodles..unless you are yourself Taiwanese and/or someone has either told you or taken you here before.

Looks shady since it's right beside a sex store, but it's across from Metrotown on the same block as Sushi Garden. IMHO, hands down the best TWBN in town. Also has great desserts and drinks.
Open Tues-Sat 12-3 and 5-8 or smth like that. Check link or urbanspoon or call to confirm.

Those good gems or what? Let me know what you think.

worth mentioning. the curry katsu or the katsu set (with 2 whole pieces of katsu!) are must orders. they also use bulldog tonkatsu sauce which is a lot tastier than the kikkoman variety. although im still kind of puzzled as to the owners choice in obscure locations/decor. the last location looked like a cottage and the inside looked like someones house. this time its a old looking cafe.

Park Crest Diner
#16 - 5901 Broadway, Burnaby, BC [View Map]
604-293-1633

Been there twice with family and friends. It's a 50's style diner real good honest food and great prices.

Review someone did a while back.

Food Vancouver Restaurant Review for Park Crest Diner in Vancouver, BC

Alphamale 09-12-2011 06:43 PM

Without actually trying the place, the 29th ave cafe's prices seem...rather inflated for the neighborhood...which deters me from trying it since most of the stuff seems rather "pedestrian".

More like equestrian because their prices give off the impression you gotta be a baller to dine there.
