Yeah, just checked with a Wind authorized dealer yesterday that hardware discounts / Windtab is not available with the Mobi transfer promotion either. :okay:

way2quik 03-02-2015 03:36 PM

anyone's Mobilicity service down?
I've been down since noon.

Traum 03-02-2015 03:37 PM

Been fine with me all day long.

Have you tried rebooting your phone?

way2quik 03-02-2015 03:59 PM

Yep. Tried connecting to the network and my phone says it's restricted access.
Gonna give CS a call I suppose.
Thanks

Rogers given approval to buy Mobilicity - News1130

Quote:

TORONTO, ON. (NEWS 1130) – Rogers Communications has been given the go-ahead by Industry Canada to buy a smaller wireless carrier. It has purchased Mobilicity for a couple hundred million dollars.

Rogers will also sell some spectrum to Wind Mobile, which has emerged as one of the leading challengers to Canada’s three biggest wireless companies. This deal still needs to be approved by the Competition Bureau.

Rogers says the $440 million purchase price will be offset by tax losses valued at about $175 million that the company will acquire. The deal follows earlier attempts by Telus to acquire Mobilicity that were blocked by the federal government.

Rogers is the parent company of NEWS 1130 Radio.
So, by selling some spectrum to Wind, Rogers has effectively been allowed to buy Mobilicity out for a mere $265M. If you may remember, Telus has previously been trying to pay $350M to accquire Mobilicity, but the federal government threatened Telus to back off or face retaliatory action from the federal government. Previously, the federal government had repeatedly indicated that it did not want a major incumbent to gobble up wireless spectrum, which was set aside for new entrants to foster more competition.

Obviously, in the federal government's eyes, Rogers was obviously not a major incumbent in the mobile phone market... FailFish

way2quik 06-24-2015 07:01 PM

It's pretty much a done deal. Question is, when will WIND start their promos to attract those remaining Mobilicity users over...

I rather switch to WIND than be converted over.

willystyle 06-24-2015 09:11 PM

From what I gathered so far, WIND will have 20MHz of spectrum in BC (unsure about Alberta and Ontario). That's enough for them to roll out LTE in AWS in BC. I hope my monthly plan won't go up though. I've been with them for 4 years.

Currently, WIND's network in Van is very overloaded.

FerrariEnzo 06-25-2015 07:50 AM

Rogers paid $465 million...

Deal includes Rogers buying Shaws unused spectrum and selling it to Wind, in return Wind selling some of theirs back to Rogers... lol... not sure why Wind would want to sell any is beyond me....

Sucks for telus, if they werent greedy, they would have gotten the deal... too bad they wanted all the spectrum... :lawl:

Probably gonna switch over this week, but how are Mobilicity data speeds and coverage these days though?

Mobilicity has a new $40/month plan that Rogers will honour after network switch | MobileSyrup.com
Quote:

Mobilicity, which was recently purchased by Rogers, has a new back-to-school promo. Similar to its competitor Wind Mobile, Mobilicity is offering up a chance to “start the school year on the right foot” with its $40/month plan that includes unlimited talk, text and data.

Those interested must sign up on its automatic monthly payment option, and the full details include:

Unlimited Data
Canada-Wide Talk
North American Long Distance
Global Text (including Canada, obviously)
30 Minutes North American Voice Roaming
Voicemail, Caller ID and Call Features
While the carrier is now completely owned by Rogers, Mobilicity is still operating on its own AWS towers. However, those interested might want to take advantage of the offer as it seems that Rogers will grandfather all Mobilicity plans once the network migration is completed.

In an email statement to us, Rogers confirmed that “Currently, Mobilicity customers are running on the existing Mobilicity towers/network. As we roll out the red carpet to welcome them to Rogers, we will switch Mobilicity sites over to the Rogers network, further improving our network and giving customers even greater access to fast, reliable service. All Mobilicity plans are being honoured.”

Razor Ramon HG 08-19-2015 06:13 PM

If you guys don't mind gambling $40 + cost of a Mobilicity SIM card, it could be worth signing up right now and hoping Rogers gives you a nice grandfathered plan.

I think Rogers might just lock the Canada-wide calling to Provincial-wide calling and just cap the data at 6GB rather than the soft cap.

I won't be doing this myself as I get an employee line from Wind for free, but if I was still with Rogers, I would be highly considering it.

Even when you are getting a good signal, Mobilicity data speed is shxt. I can't even watch a YouTube video on my phone without the video hiccuping, although the audio is generally not affected.

Currently, coverage is shxt just like before. As the Mobile Syrup article pointed out, subscribers are currently still only using the Mobilicity towers, so it (coverage) isn't anything to rave about.

Gucci Mane 08-19-2015 07:51 PM

i wouldn't trust robbers either.. who knows how long its going to be before that gets switched over.

stereo12 08-19-2015 08:04 PM

Mobilicity

Try it, it's fine in most places I use it but again that's me. Data is somewhat inconsistant if you need to clash of clan and war in outskirts o Mobilicity's coverage but my 2nd line has been with them since 2011 and it has gotten better since then. Just not upto par I you are used to using the Big3.

Sign up now to be locked in and grandfathered I all I gotta say.

Araaadi 08-21-2015 05:29 PM

Signed up today, but didnt port over my number yet. Waiting for an actual tower change to happen, and if it doesn't happen I wont loose my old plan.

stereo12 08-21-2015 05:31 PM

Just make sure you port over your number before promo is over if you intend on having the promotion.

Razor Ramon HG 08-22-2015 05:39 PM

After thinking more carefully about the Mobilicity/Rogers migration, I think Rogers will actually just migrate all Mobilicity customers to Chatr instead. There's actually no point for them to migrate Mobi customers to Rogers when Chatr already has the area based coverage system in place making it easier for them to manage the new customers.

bcrdukes 08-22-2015 07:44 PM

Mobilicity's plans cost nowhere in the range of ChatR if you match them dollar for dollar, feature for feature. Customer management isn't difficult - keeping them is the struggle.

I can't predict the future, but I can't see Mobilicity changing much in the foreseeable future.

RE-Jo 08-26-2015 10:51 PM

Sorry for the dumb question, but does this mean mobilicity will have the same level of reception you would expect from Rogers?

I have recently started my own business, and Wind's reception is no longer acceptable because I have zero reception on some job sites... But if mobilicity can benefit from Rogers, I wouldn't mind switching.

Razor Ramon HG 08-26-2015 10:53 PM

If reliability is your number one concern, I would make the switch to Mobilicity and see what Rogers does.

Wind will probably have a holiday promotion, but this Mobilicity jump will only happen once.

Kaolinite 11-03-2015 09:22 PM

I am currently with Fido and my contract ends in Jan 2016.. Im thinking of switching over to Wind.. but is Mobilicity the better choice since its with Rogers now? The unlimited data plans are very tempting compared to my 1gb =p

Not sure how thing works but Rogers might keep Mobi the way it is. I mean why would anyone want to stay with Rogers and pay $100 when they can jump ship to Mobi to get unlimited data pay a fraction of what they are paying and can use Rogers network.

I think Rogers won't allow that happen. So most likely Mobi will run on its current network.

Traum 11-03-2015 09:58 PM

Mobi's signal strength and coverage hasn't improved one bit -- that is to say, they still suck. The unlimited data thing is nice, but bear in mind that data speeds are not fast at all. Good enough for YouTube streaming on the phone though, I suppose...

jinxcrusader 11-10-2015 11:55 PM

I've been using Mobilicity since they came to GVRD and did not even know Mobilicity was bought out by Rogers. My day to day operations with my phone has not changed one but. Data is still slow compared to the big 3. Network drops once every 3 or so months for a couple mins/hours. No price adjustments either.

racerman88 11-11-2015 03:12 PM

I spoke to Rogers about this and they said that Mobilicity will remain at tier 2 speeds
