insurance question about keyed car
 

Just posting this for a friend. They had their car keyed all around by some hater and looks like the car needs a full paint job to repair the damage. Deep scratches right to the metal. They already got some quotes from ICBC approved autobody shops. So when they pay the $300 deductable and insurance agrees to have the car painted how does it work then? does ICBC just hand over a cheque and you are free to go to any shop and get the car repaired? Reason I ask is because they may be wanting to get the work done by a private painter instead. Basically just trying to find out if it needs to be an ICBC approved autobody.

If it isn't an ICBC approved bodyshop, they will need to go see an adjuster.

Subsequently, the adjuster will give you a quote/estimate and if the cost is more, then you'll have to see them again to get it re-evaluated.

IMO, just go to an ICBC approved shop. It's far less hassle unless your friend is trying to do something rather illegal on the lines of fraud.

the private painter I mentioned is a guy we know... just trying to bring him some business that's all.

They just wanted to know how it works. I don't know either.

does the private painter have a shop?? If he doesn't I don't think it will work. If he owns a private shop, you can tell ICBC you are going to that shop. Basically they will just ask you to get the repairs done first and they might have an adjuster to look over the work done. Then either ICBC will pay the painter for his work minus the $300, but the most likely case is ICBC will ask you to pay the painter first, then give you back what they owe you.

i know that if every panel is keyed or enough panels to be blended then you have to pay a percentage of the depresiation...

you can ask for a cash out. it won't be the same value as they would pay to a body shop, they would reduce the labor rate... but you'll have to bring the car into a claim center and have it looked at... if you get an asshole appraiser, they will start adding depreciation for rock chips and so on... i would just go with an ICBC approved shop. PM me if you want a name of a really good painter. He painted all of my cars and they are doing the widebody supra there right now, the one racing greed built, they are making a new custom widebody for it and painting it... these guys do top notch work

quick question, if something like this does happen and the entire car needs to be repainted...do you have to repaint it the exact same colour? Or can you do any other colour, I guess some paints are more expensive. But if you pay the difference between say a normal gloss white paint vs. a pearl white paint

Usually ICBC just hands you the claim papers, you bring it to the body shop and pay the deductible.

If you're private painter is gonna charge LESS than the claim, then ICBC might approve you going to your friend. But from what I remember you may have to pay out of pocket first, submit the reciept to ICBC, then they cut you the cheque. Takes a few weeks to get the cheque.

All in all, WAY easier to just go to an ICBC approved shop.

- You can have it done at a none icbc shop but you have to pay out of pocket and get a check cut by icbc, if its more than they estimated you might not get all the money back.
- ICBC wont always cash settle a vandalism claim
- If the shop agrees they can paint the car any color you want, UNLESS ICBC has made a note about no color change.

ICBC does NOT allow color changes. if a shop is caught doing a color change on a claim paint job, ICBC will remove them from their approved vendor list. there are very few shops willing to risk that... but if you can find one, great

Actually they do allow color changes, of course there is certain circumstances.

anyways the car is already at some ICBC approved autobody so that is already solved.

ICBC is more flexable than most think. I am in the process of repairing the front end of my pick up. I will be replacing the stock bumper with an ARB winch bumper. The value of the stock bumper will be given to the body shop, and I pay the difference in price while ICBC will still pay for the removal of my old bumper and install of my new one. Colour can be changed. Basicly if anything more is being done you just pay the difference. I discussed all this with my adjuster last time I was there

Does the insurance rates go up for next yr u renew after u make the claim though? I have a friend who also has been keyed and is contemplating whether to claim it thru icbc or jus get it done privately.
