Here's a typical extension ladder:

You can extend it by pulling a rope on a pulley, but I find it easier to push up on the extension piece instead. However, that's a lot slower than the firefighter putting his weight on to the rope to extend the ladder.

the lead guy was awesome...

i think the fire fighter THREW the extensions up as he jumped in the air.... that's hard man. lol

No way! lol
You can definitely see a black cord with a pulley system in the ladder when they are running with it.
And the way how the guy jumps up and does a "pull down" motion gives it away.

After watching it again, I also noticed there's a sandpit at the end. Not sure why.
Maybe to help stabilize the ladder quicker.

fliptuner 08-25-2011 08:22 AM

I like how the guy starts climbing the ladder while it's still being extended, before it even hits the wall.

Growing up in the DTES, I used to watch firefighters train and practice at the No. 2 Firehall on Gore and Cordova. Awesome stuff.
