200km 3pm during heavy traffic?!?!?!

I know people who get 7 days impounded for going 75km on a city road
It's because there is so little/weak evidence, I doubt anyone was radar'ed at 200km/h. IMO they will have a lot of difficulty proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt

exactly...people are so quick to jump on these guys, honestly people hear the exhausts making a little bit of noise and assume cars are flying.

Concerns me that you can have your car impounded for a week and face towing/impound charges as well as fines because citizens called in to say "They are all going 200 km/h"

Anyone here got a ticket based on someone calling you in?

While I do believe the drivers should get large fines and loose licenses (especially for the N drivers), I’m a big believer in that the police or province has no right to take your property unless purchased by illegal means or with currency directly related to crime.

Toss the book at these morons, but the idea that the cars should be forfeited by the owners and sold is ridiculous and a law that Canadians should be fighting. The whole idea is extremely “big brother” to me.

Good lord I hope these idiots loose there licenses though.

+1

doing 200km/h near george massey at 3pm? unless these cars could actually fly, i find it highly unlikely

i'd be pissed the fck off if somebody called in and said i was going a certain speed and the po took it for fact and impounded my car too

The reason this stuff happens is because licencing in BC is a fucking joke. It seems like any retard can get a licence. Monetary punishment doesn't do anything for these rich dicks. If you cannot follow the rules then that licence you were granted should be taken away, plain and simple.

@91civic
I somewhat agree, but.. The people who are getting their cars impounded and sold are not struggling students living on a budget driving a 88 tercel...
They are people who are wealthy enough to buy a 100k car, can afford a good lawyer, and have complete disregard for other drivers on the road.
Ex. The two drivers driving up to whistler and racing.

SO what if they get their licenses suspended.. It doesn't stop them from driving. Prisons are over crowded for them to get any jail time.
They need to hit them where it would hurt the most. In their pocket book. Or their parents book since they are so young.
A few years ago that driver that killed a woman while street racing got pulled over a few years later with a suspensed licence.

seriously, if they were radared going 200km, you'd think they only get a 7 day impound? obviously its ppl calling in claiming they're going that speed, or that the media is harsh hyping it up (you know how they love street racing stories)

not siding with these guys dont get me wrong, just saying how i see it

Who cares how fast they were going. It was fast enough to get people to call the cops after them. It's not like everybody who called was from RS looking to troll these guys. It was Joe Public.

Yep, and keep in mind it was multiple people who dialed into 911. I travel 99 regularly and it has to take something pretty aggregious for me to feel compelled to call someone in. Much less have multiple people call it in.

i am pretty sure a pack of super cars with their amazing exhaust sounds and quick acceleration will get a few calls for no reason at all other than they sounded like they were going quick. What if only a couple of them were speeding? What if it was just one? Its unfair to label all these guys street racers without accurate info.

You missed this part of the story: two cars would stall traffic, clearing up gaps, while others raced.

Edit: allegedly "raced"

For me that illustrates that the penalties for driving with a suspended license need to be more extreme. I remember hearing about a case where someone was pulled over more than 10 times with a suspended license. How are these people not in Jail?

I believe in less government and common sense. Unfortunately there is less and less common sense now, which I think means penalties for certain actions needs to be higher.

The government and police departments’ ability to step in a start seizing private property for something that didn’t even see a real trial for the defendant goes beyond what I think is acceptable.

While I believe that dangerous driving needs to be dealt with in a strict manner, I don’t believe simply taking peoples property is the correct way to do it. Impounding for a set time, Large fines, possible jail time, and forfeiture of driving license is all fine to me - seizing and selling is not.

From the fails Im getting, I would suspect Im in the minority in this view anyway!

I absolutely LOVE THIS. I deal with goofs like these kids all the time and I feel no sympathy seeing their spoiled brat asses getting brought back to reality. Just look at those kids they're so young they have no concept of responsibility or any idea how to safely operate the vehicles their parents let them drive. I'm not a fan of the new speeding laws but these impounds are completely justified. I'm sure all those kids with N's will be losing their licenses for at least 3-6 months just adding more awesome to the reality bitchslap they just received.

I saw that grey lambo with the license plate "I ZHU" yesterday morning. Surprisingly he was driving quite slow to enter hwy1 from West Van and stayed in the right lane going slowly. I even passed him. Funny to hear this story this morning.

maybe Dad was driving?

BC = home of the mail order drivers license. Good thing for them this isn't Toronto, might have resulted in smashy smashy!

The cars have been impounded for seven days, and each driver will be issued with a $196 violation ticket and a charge of driving without due consideration for others.
