Current shaw modem

I was talking to my mom about upgrading her house to wifi, and she said that her modem only has one cable output. It's about 3 or 4 years old, which to me seems pretty new still... I thought Shaw would have been issuing modems with built-in routers by that time.

The question is, have they started doing it yet? it's absurd to think that an ISP is only giving people one LAN connection by default... but this is Shaw we're talking about so who knows...

They started doing the modem/wifi combo already. I actually got mine installed today.

I have the Cisco DPC3825 modem/wifi combo.

SkinnyPupp 08-31-2011 10:29 PM

You mean this?

Shaw Internet

They fucking charge $68 for a wireless modem?

SkinnyPupp 08-31-2011 10:32 PM

Do they at least have a modem/router? So she can get her own wifi router for $20 instead of (fucking) $70?

That was the first one they were giving out apparently. I thought I was going to get that one but then the guy came with the CISCO one, not SMC.

Cisco Model DPC3825 and EPC3825 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 Wireless Residential Gateway - Support - Cable Modems - Consumer - Cisco

Also in the stock cisco firmware, you can disable the wireless function of the modem and use the combo as a stand-alone modem and use your own router. Very simple to set up.

They're still using the shitty Motorola.
IIRC it depends on your plan.

Did you pay anything for it?

I paid the 99$ for broadband 50/homephone/basic cable. It came no charge with the plan.

OK she upgraded her plan for $2 more a month, and got a new wifi modem, new PVR, full cable with HD, and upgraded to 25 mbps from 7 or whatever.

Man she was getting ripped before eh? :lol

TOS'd 09-01-2011 12:01 AM

^ Yup, although if she just stuck with the basic cable + couple HD channel package for $99, she may have lost some basic channels (most from around 30ish-51, if those are important to her). And to get those back she would need to add those $5/$10 packages.

terkan 09-02-2011 12:53 AM

so they started giving out the cisco gateway instead of the SMC pos now?? time to call them up and change mine then ~

Tim Budong 09-02-2011 02:28 AM

the older shaw legacy packages are better for TV
but man..its 20bux more for me to go to the 50mb
but if they are giving away the cisco modem, i might just consider

SkinnyPupp 09-02-2011 02:38 AM

What I don't get is, if you have fast internet why would you ever want to pay for TV?

the new wireless smc modem is GARBAGE you will get dropped over wireless connection every so and then...You get the option to make it as a MODEM or modem + router and this can be done only remotely via SHAW tech support..

TOS'd 09-02-2011 10:44 AM

^ the new new cisco one i have lets you change it to a modem only via the router advanced settings.

I'm currently debating which shaw/telus package to go for. my fiancee and I don't watch a lot of TV, so I think I'd be ok with just an HD antenna, but she really likes the food network.. is there any way i can get the food network without signing up with shaw/telus?

Maybe, you'll have to do some research. Does Netflix stream channels?
