Buying second-hand car with aftermarket parts

Hey guys,

So I found a IS350 that I really like, but there's been a couple of modifications done to the car which include:

1.cold air intake
2.greddy exhausts

just wanted to gather your opinions on buying cars that have these parts installed.

Thanks in advance!

Nothing too extreme there, just make sure the exhaust isn't leaking and installed properly.

Those are entry level bolt-on mods. You'll be fine.

Ask if OEM parts come with the car too in case you want to switch back later on.

Make sure it's got a valid Aircare and up to date (as in it just went through or will go through).

I happen to know of an IS350 I inspected awhile back where the owner replaced factory cats with aftermarket and now the car will never pass Aircare because of a check engine light.

Only problem for the owner was the person he bought it from no longer had the stock parts, which come to about $5K from Lexus. Don't know what happened to the car, but since he brought it up from the US it's pretty unlikely he's going to be able to go after the seller to get his money back.

New vehicles are given a 7-year exemption from Aircare. As of this year, only 2004s and older require testing and since 2nd gen IS's came out in 2006 IIRC then just sell the car before then

True about the exemption. But if you plan on keeping the car I think you'd want to make sure it's "legal" so you don't get stuck with a huge repair bill later on.

I got mixed up - I looked at my files and it was a 300 not a 350.

Regardless, I'd never buy a car with aftermarket parts if the seller didn't also have the original parts in case you wanted to switch it back. And if any exhaust mods are done I'd want to make sure everything is cat-back and nothing was done to the cats or O2 sensors which could come back to bite you in the ass later on.

cancel your insurance a couple weeks before aircare.
get new insurance for one year a couple days later, done.

or just put a stock cat/exhaust back on and pass it... once passed put dat straight pipe back on.

it'll be fine for aircare if the check engine light is not lit.

It's an IS350 dudes not an AE86.

CEL's are just the 1st thing they look for.

You can still fail with no CEL's if your sensor readiness shows shows as not ready.

^ but if it's driven for a while and the CEL still does not light up usually it's perfectly ok.

Hey guys,

So I found a Geo Metro that I really like, but there's been a couple of modifications done to the car which include:

1. BOV whistle
2. jack-in-the-box antenna toy
3. Type-R decals

just wanted to gather your opinions on buying cars that have these parts installed.

not sure if I can pass air care with modification #1
