Virus halp I'm not sure how I got this one but it's being a PITA, is wouldn't let MSE download updates and it prevents me from going to any AV site, scans with MSE manually updated and Spybot S & D found nothing. I formatted my main HDD and reinstalled and still the same issue so I assume it's lingering on one of my other HDD's (I have 3 total). Now I'm running Ubuntu as a temp, is there a way to remove this damn virus off my other drives so I can go back to Windows? Or a way to remove it after I reinstall XP again? TIA. |
Try an online virus scanner. Alternatively, try booting into safe mode and installing that way to see if it makes a difference. In my experience though, if you have a virus, you really are better off backing up and doing a fresh install. Are you running Ubuntu on the same machine? If so, just run the virus scanner from there. If not, move the hard drive with the virus over and scan it that way. |
Safe mode made no difference, any suggestions for an online virus scanner? I'm doing a fresh install, but I don't want to have to nuke my 1.5 TB worth of data drives. Yeah Ubuntu is on the same machine at the moment. |
Hmm, what i suggest is to turn off anything that starts up when you reboot your computer, usually virus tend to be active on a known process. |
online scanner: panda; run in safe mode when MSE or spybot doesn't work, time to kill processes and use combofix etc. Scrub Your PC Clean: Remove Malware in Four Easy Steps |

do you have another machine to put this drive into or can you install windows on a USB flash drive with an antivirus program to scan your HDD? |
Run clamAV from Ubuntu to see what virus you have. |
^ is "clamTK" the same thing? That's running right now, I'll see if it picks up anything. If not, then I'll run Panda. Quote:

Yes. |
Update: I ran clamTK on all my drives and it found a few problems, I deleted them all and reinstalled Windows XP MCE (Dell OEM disc) last night and installed the drivers just now, but like before I can't download MSE or MalWareBytes or anything. I'm running a Panda scan now buyt this is driving me nuts. My computer is running slo as hell right now too, which is odd as it's a fresh format. Network is slow as hell too. |
