PS3 Repair Did a search and couldn't find what I was looking for... My ps3 won't play discs anymore, has anyone had this problem and where did you get it fixed? I've asked a few people on craigslist and got quoted about $110 for it. I don't know if its worth fixing or should I just get a brand new one? This is the old bulky 40gb one. |
Personally I'd buy a new one. Maybe sell this one and recoup some of the costs towards a new one. Posted via RS Mobile |
i had this happen to my ps3 as well. its just sitting collecting dust :( |
new one...rather put another $150 on top towards a quieter/reliable system. If you don't play much I would wait another month and half...holiday season usually mean they'll throw in a bunch of games for free. |
Have a friend who got it fixed by Sony for $100. They replaced the lens or something. Anyway this was 3 years ago (1st gen PS3) and it's still going strong after the fix. Give Sony customer support a call. |
Sounds like all you need is a new bluray drive. There are videos on youtube on how to change it yourself, if your feeling brave |

If the extra cash for a new one won't really fuck you over financially, then i highly suggest getting the newer one. |
If you decide against getting it fixed I will buy it. (or you can use it yourself, as a media extender) |

Your laser is dead. It's a really easy and straight forward "bolt-on" fix. No soldering or adjusting required. All you need are some small screwdrivers and you are set. The laser itself costs around $30-$50. 1. Look for a take apart manual online. 2. Open up the PS3 and get to the optical drive. 3. Open optical drive and look at laser. 4. Order correct laser, some have 1 lens others have 2. I bought mine from DealExtreme 5. Replace laser. 6. Reassemble everything. Your PS3 is already broken, you are thinking of buying a new one. You have nothing to lose. Opening up the PS3 for the optical drive you won't go as far as the logicboard. Which means the only thing you could break is the optical drive, which is broken anyway. |
hmm so my ps3 is sorta broken as well. my port for the hdmi cable is sort of busted. i cant play anything on 1080p but i can play on 1080i and anything lower as well. is this even worth fixing? or should i just play on 1080i and not care about 1080p. |

b) be damn sure you eject the disc before you open it, it's hell to line back up if you open it with a disc inside. |
