BC Home Comfort visit? Just recently I got visited by 2 men who claim that our furnace is leaking gas, its not a big leak but you can smell it.. The furnace is burning right now, so its not like the gas isn't burning in the furnace. They say we will need to replace it otherwise it'd be dangerous. Obviously this is probably a bad thing but what I really want to know is has anyone else have someone come here like this? Are these guys legit? He sounds like he knows what hes doing, but the fact he said "I'm retarded with math" didn't sound rather professional. If anyone can let me know if these guys are legit it'd be great. They are saying it will cost $4200 for the new furnace with a government rebate of $1090 back. Paying 46.66 monthly for 72.22. The company has a website BC Comfort Ltd. - Vancouver, British Columbia - Installation and service of air conditioning, heating, plumbing, controls, ventilation, specialty piping and HVAC systems. |
It's easy to sound like you know what your doing when speaking to someone who with no knowledge of the subject being discussed. The client list is entirely commercial contractors and subdivision builders, the type of clients who care more about price than quality of work. I'd recommend you go with a smaller company where the owner is directly involved with the daily work, you'll almost certainly receive better service and higher quality of work. |
whats the math? write down what he says and i can answer it for ya whether its clocking/venting/pipe sizing. |
they knew your furnace was leaking gas, before they randomly knocked on your door? ( then called you a retard) wat... lol did you call them? did you even see a bc comfort van? you would be surprised at how many unticketed people go door to door and pull this stunt, its quite common. once they say your gas is leaking, its easy to intimidate and take advantage of people. they are scamming you. you can pm me if youd like, im a gas fitter/plumber ( btw always ask to see someone ticket) |
I'd call Teresen and ask if you have unusually high consumption over previous years. Also, I'd get a second opinion |
If they say that there's a gas leak and don't tell you to get out of the house because of the danger of an explosion, I'd definitely say they are lying. The gas leak should smell like rotten eggs, it's an additive they put in it to alert people that there's a gas leak. Gas leaks > Fortis BC Call Terasen and tell them what the BC Home Comfort men told you. They'll send someone out to check for leaks. How old is your furnace? If you do find you need a new one, get at least 2, preferably 3 estimates. |
@nsmb: no they didnt call me a retard, just they were doing the calculations he just says "im retarded at math" @everybodyelse: sorry didnt add, but he did show our bill was quite high.. we actually pay nearly 200 a month... |
I think that 200 is expensive is relative tho. It depends on the size of ur house, whether or not you are turing up the heat more. I think the best way is to look at ur statements a year ago around the same time of year and see what you're paying then. Also, if u want quality, I would get a few quotes like the others have said and also ask bc home comfort whether they perform the work themselves, whether they use sub-trades via job bidding. The more information you have, the better decision you'll make Posted via RS Mobile |
If this was an unsolicited visit, I'd say these guys are just trying to sell you a new furnace. |
scam I call it. |

^ yeah let alone enter my house. |
can you clarify if you called them to come in the first place? |
wait, you let 2 random ass strangers into your house to inspect your furnace? :suspicious: |
Seriously where do you live, cause I'd like to talk to you about duct cleaning, I can tell over the internet they are dirty. As well man, I have this sweet time share opportunity in Branson Missouri. It's like Vegas, only not. |
|
Actually, most people have filthy ducts... I'm just saying... |
BC Comfort is legit, they are mechanical contractors that usually are more in the commercial/multi-unit residential business. You definitely should shop around for pricing if you decide to replace your furnace; some of the smaller guys will be cheaper. |
lol i didnt let anyone in.. i came home from school with my parents letting 2 guys in the house. but yeah forget about bchomecomfort now :alone: i called fortisbc's emergency line saying there is a leak. a technician came immediately checked everything out. Apparently there is a very very small leak, but overall everything else is fine and doesn't even need replacing lol :fuckyea: just gonna get a normal gas/heating dewd w.e to replace the piping etc thats about it. not a 4grand project |
