Long black cords on the road

Anybody know what are the cords for on the roads attached to the pole with a small device?

I saw a few of them on the roads like Kingsway Westbound after passing Subway near Victoria, and another one is Knight and King Edward after driving by Pricesmart.

I've always wondered about them too.

Engineers put them there to see how much the road is used. Mostly to gain statistics for future projects on the road.

Every time I've seen those things on a road, traffic calming usually gets put in right after they come out.

if you pay attention, there are also one cord versions and two cord versions.

I think its for research for if the area needs speed bumps or not. The 2 cord one records how fast you're going.

seen two sets of two going up the hill to pt roberts border crossing

Matlock 09-21-2011 03:36 PM

Either for measuring speed or volume of traffic? That's all I can guess.

TOS'd 09-21-2011 03:45 PM

^ yea i think so too, the two cord for speed and one cord for volume. if anyone remembers the 45th ave thread, they had those cords for the longest time. and now in that section, 45th is 30km/h and theres also that god awful intersection with the 4 way stop and concrete barriers to prevent left turns.

i worked for city of delta once dealing with these. they are just basically a data collector for traffic. it records time vs how many cars went over the hoses.

Gridlock 09-21-2011 09:42 PM

Big day for data collection, because they were on the Patullo bridge today too, along with people manually counting the cars.

We pay people to do this?

They're called Automatic Traffic Counters (or ATC's).

Wanna buy one? Automatic traffic counters

haha...I had a job counting cars in high school. They want people sometimes because they want to seperate heavy trucks out from regular cars. It was a great job at the time - just sat in a lawn chair listening to music looking at cars.

^ and then go "oh snap look it's a [insert exotic car here]! Gotta take pic and post on RS!"

It's the best way to determine future construction projects for the roads and to make infrastructure changes. If they see a heavy amount of truck traffic on a small road then they make restrictions or adjust the road if it is vital.

I always stop and do a big greasy rolling 2nd gear burnout across them

i ran over 2 cords on the way to work this morning. on the side of the road there were 3 people with reflective vests sitting in lawn chairs.
