Anybody else get a Digital Box from Shaw?

I got a black box from Shaw this morning. The funny thing is I don't ever remember asking for one, or remember receiving notifications that they'd be sending one.

What do I do with it?

Expresso 09-21-2011 03:37 PM

Aren't they discontinuing the use of analog signals soon? So this may be the replacement box you need to get the digital signal.

Yup. They sent me 2 boxes for my 2 TV's upstairs last Thursday.

Culture_Vulture 09-21-2011 03:46 PM

I'm no tekkie, but I think my TV's current setup could receive the digital signal without the replacement box. I'm just worried once I get it set up they're gonna start charging me hidden fees or something for shit I don't really need--I watch TV scarcely enough as it is.

Sometimes those sales reps send it to ppls houses without them knowing or even if they said no, in most cases elderly ppl. If that was the case, it is up to you to bring it back to Shaw or they will start charging. So glad I don't have to deal with those calls anymore lol..analog signal was discontinued aug 31st IIRC

JSALES 09-21-2011 04:19 PM

is there a way i can request for a digital box without getting charged? my parents received one but it's for the tv in the living room. i want one for my room

your TV most definitely can NOT decode Shaw's digital feed without at least a cable box. No hidden fee's.

Domani 09-21-2011 05:55 PM

the new packages now include at least 1 dstb.

I recall they were discontinued on the 31st too. But I can still receive all the channels that I had on my cable before, without ever having a cable box.

I'm pretty confused. Guess I'll just have to call them and find out.

How so? You need a STB for every TV that you want to use. Not to mention you're limited to, at the moment, max 3 HD + 1 SD streams. 4 channels at the most can be viewed at any 1 time in 1 household. Recording something? Minus 1 stream per recording. What if I want to record 2 things and have other TVs watch HD as well? I would only have 1 HD and 1 SD stream left. So, who should watch the Canucks in HD, and who should watch it in SD?

Oh, don't forget, every stream cuts into your internet bandwidth.

A single twisted pair does not offer a lot in terms of bandwidth.

People who got their TV signal from an Antenna will need a special box, it is not the digital box(the digital box allows for you to watch certain channels that are now digital, for example channel 55 Speed is now Digital and you need a black box to view it)

If you subscribe to a cable or satellite television service, such as Shaw Cable or Shaw Direct, or view your programming via the Internet, you will not be affected by this transition.

If you are not watching your television programming through cable or satellite and if you watch analog TV through over-the-air signals via rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna, you are most likely watching at least some analog over-the-air channels and may experience a loss of service. If you have a TV in your home away from home that you watch with the use of rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna, without a cable or satellite subscription, you may be affected by the transition. If you are affected and you wish to continue viewing your local programming, you will need to do the following:

if you've got an older Moto DCT you're supposed to get them replaced with a new one too something about not being able to get PPV anymore from the old ones

^true

If you guys have the older dct2000, then you can qualify to get an additional dstb (the small black one) free if charge if needed due to incompatibility with sod. If you don't care about video on demand, then the old moto boxes will still work with cable

^ This person is right

A lot of people are confused when it comes to the analog digital conversion thing. The analog signal that is discontinue as of Aug 31st is for over the air (OTA) signal only. The signal for TV you get when using a big outdoor or amplified indoor antenna. This is done to free up the frequency so the government can sell them to the cell phone companies.

Shaw cable also has has analog channels from 2-58 and some in the 120 range and those are not part of the analog to digital conversion made mandatory by the government. But Shaw is going to convert channels 29-up to digital anyways by the Fall of 2012. So if you just have basic cable then you're ok without a digital cable box. But if your subscription includes channels 29-up, then you will need a digital cable box to view them in the future. Some channels already converted to digital such as Speed Channel on channel 55. That channel went digital a long time ago and can only be viewed with a digital cable box while all the other channels around it are still analog. Shaw is doing this to save money. It cuts down on cable theft and they don't need to send anyone to your house to remove or add filters when you want to add or remove channels. All digital channels can be added or removed right away from their end when you call them.

JesseBlue 09-22-2011 02:42 PM

now if it was shaw saying that you would now need to 'decode' this older analog signal...thats a different story...just like the days of the old black decoder box...

trip 09-22-2011 05:23 PM

the older dct 2000 still works fine the only change is it no longer is able to order VOD movies and this is why notices were going out for customers to upgrade their current box to the new dct700 boxes.

the customer retains the older box and are provided with a life time free rental dct700. This box is property of shaw cable and must be returned if the account is disconnected or cable vision services canceled.
