Budget Computer

I'd like a second opinion on building a budget gaming machine for my brother.

budget is $1000

I've compiled something together for around $850. Some of the parts being on sale. However, I'd like to see if anyone could throw one together that's better in performance within the budget, meets minimal requirements for lowest possible price or the best overall performance for the price. link included would be greatly appreciated.

nothing too extreme. these are probably the bare minimum i'd say.

i5 equivalent or higher.
4gb ram
at least 500gb hdd
msi geforce gtx560 (settled on more of a budget card) NCIX.com - Buy MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II OC 880MHZ 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini-HDMI DX11 PCI-E Video Card - MSI/MicroStar - N560GTX-TI Twin Frozr II/OC - in Canada
700w psu (give or take)

thanks in advance.

stereo12 09-25-2011 12:00 AM

you can probably build a..

i5 2500k - 200
8gb ram - 70
560ti - 220
650-750 psu - 70
$100 case. - 100
1tb hd - 60
mobo mini atx p67 - 120
cdr/dvdr - 20

rough prices, but i shouldnt be too off because i just built 2 systems like this, but i spent 1300 on some nicer parts.

"gaming computer"
2600k, 12gb ram, h67 :fuckthatshit:

Purely 09-25-2011 12:24 PM

why do you need 12gb ram?

roastpuff 09-25-2011 01:36 PM

What kind of budget build is that? You're emphasizing the wrong thing. His brother is gaming - which demands more GPU power rather than CPU power.

Here's a semi decent one.

Code:

NCIX Bundle Deal Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Processor & Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 Motherboard $359.99
          1 x Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Unlocked Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Sandy Bridge 6MB
          1 x Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 ATX LGA1155 Z68 DDR3 2PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 2PCI HDMI SLI SATA3 USB3.0 Motherboard
1 x FREE Blazing Angels (PC Game - OEM DVD-ROM) ** Intel Promo Bundle Only **

OCZ FATAL1TY Series 750W ATX 24PIN SLI Ready Modular Cables 135mm Red Fan 80+ Bronze Power Supply $84.99

2x Corsair XMS CMX4GX3M1A1600C9 4GB 1X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 DIMM Memory Module $49.98 total

Visiontek Radeon 6950 2GB DDR5 2XMINIDP 2XDVI PCI-E DIRECTX11 Video Card        $259.99

Deus EX: Human Revolution PC Game Electronic Digital Download Coupon *AMD Promo Only* $0.00

Zalman Z9 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case Black 3X5.25 1X3.5 5X3.5INT No PS W/ Fan Controller & Temp Display        $57.98

LG Internal 22X SUPER-MULTI Drive Black Pata OEM        $18.99

Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA3 3.5IN Internal Hard Drive OEM $99.99
YOUR TOTAL        $931.91

There can still be extra savings had by price-matching, and picking a different motherboard other than a Z68 unit. Also, a smaller HDD. No OS or assembly included. All prices from NCIX.

I went with the Hitachi because it's almost as fast as a WD Black, and has twice the space - I use one myself in conjunction with my SSD.

The Z68 board will enable SRT in the future for performance improvement.

Vansterdam 09-25-2011 03:19 PM

No, it's the fact that you picked a H67 board and then went to a K-processor, and picked out the meant-for-X58-based-boards 12GB RAM pack...

H67 boards are crippled in o/cing, no OC capability.

K-series processors have unlocked multipliers, which means O/C is very easy to do with a P67 or Z68-based board.

12GB of RAM has no usefulness for a LGA1155 processor, because you have an odd number of modules - it actually disables dual channel for extra RAM which most people will not need. Tri-channel DDR is only on LGA1366 i7's and X58 boards. Get 8GB (2x4GB modules) instead. Dude, I can find 16GB for $100 flat. It's a better deal than the RAM u picked out.

for budget computer why no AMD?

on sale for 127.99

bloodmack 09-25-2011 10:08 PM

my current build

EVGA 750i FTW mobo
E8400 + Kingwin RVT 9225 - aftermarket CPU fan for O/C currently at 4.2GHZ
Cosair 750 Watt
8 GB OCZ 1066
Antec 900
EVGA 295GTX - people tell me that the 4series is todays equivilant in terms of power etc.
1TB samsung HDD

this cost me just about 1800$ and i bought it about 2 1/2 years ago so it could possibly be just around your price limit maybe with some minor adjustments :P

Note: The only 2 games I cant run at my highest possible settings are far cry 2 and crysis. and 2 downsides is that the tech might be a bit dated compared to i5's/i7's and RAM speeds aren't as fast as the newer ones but it still does the job.

fs604 09-25-2011 10:39 PM

Do note that there is a new versioon of the hyper 212, the evo so you should be getting this instead.

Dont waste an extra 100$ on 2600k.

Also check out toms hardware's monthly best gpu for the money to use as a guideline for choosing a gpu.

get a Xeon E3-1230.... its basically an I7 without the internal gpu, 200mhz slower than a i7-2600 but priced at the same as a i5-2500

SkinnyPupp 09-26-2011 03:49 AM

I put together this build for a friend with a similar budget. I don't know if she's going to follow my advice though; she's getting bad advice from others, and I don't want to argue about it with them through her :)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...RraGc&hl=en_GB

Switch to 560ti if you prefer

noTirl 09-26-2011 01:10 PM

hey skinnypupp
quick search through pricebat or shopbot could save your friend another 100~ IF they are purchasing it in vancouver ( i see your loc as hongkong )

SkinnyPupp 09-26-2011 06:39 PM

Yeah those are just the components based on Newegg.ca pricing. Easier for me to put together. It's up to them to get the components where they see fit :)

That's what something I would since I am into PC gaming. A little slower in CPU and less RAM shouldn't affect game play too much. There are room to upgrade the PC later on if need to. i mean you can do little upgrades along the way like adding more Fans or chaing the CPU cooler, getting more RAM later on. PSU and MD is pretty decent and will allow you to do upgrades later on. If you don't want the SSD you can put that money into a better video card NCIX.com - Buy EVGA GeForce GTX 580 Fermi 772MHZ 1536MB GDDR5 2XDVI Mini-HDMI PCI-E Video Card - eVGA - 015-P3-1580-AR - in Canada $479.
