Do you have quick POST enabled in the BIOS? Maybe your computer is doing a full RAM check every time... hence the long wait? I don't know, maybe it is looking for the extra HDD still - maybe it is the secondary controller?

No idea how to disable/enable it with MSI UEFI. Methinks it's still looking for the secondary HDD, I don't see any other feasible explanation considering my HDD is very healthy and barely filled. I ran a full disk check and defragged it last night just in case but nothing out of the ordinary came up.

It's definitely related to Windows looking for the drive, driving me insane

And by slow boot I mean I'm already past the UEFI/BIOS splash screen, that goes by in an instant, it's the actual loading screen that slows down.

Try looking at your startup.ini under msconfig. Maybe something got added or out of the norm. Start disabling things you don't need.

Typo in the first paragraph. I think you mean 7970 instead of 7870.

Good article! Will you be testing a Tahiti LE version vs. the regular 7870?

Also, do you have a NAS recommendation, Skinny?

If it's worth noting, out of the few startup services in msconfig I have running, none of them are located on my HDD, all on my SSD. I'm totally out of ideas.

sorry, just to get rid of all the obvious here. have you checked the startup tab? although there may be only a few things starting up, it does not necessarily mean it will be a quick boot. could be a resource heavy program loading up.

whats interesting is you said it boots up fast until you plug in your HDD. so might be a program relating in the startup trying to access your HDD.

and just to throw this in there as a possible reason, check the windows partitioning. Control Panel > search Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management.

check your HDD from there and see if something is weird there. other than that, i'm out of ideas myself =\

Nothing out of the ordinary, except for that "system reserve 100mb" but that doesn't matter since it's fine if it's just the SSD booting.

It's also worth noting that I have started the computer in basically every mode that you can start a Windows PC up in, including with no startup programs running and only MS services, but with the HDD connected it's still slow as hell.

Perhaps I'm blind and totally missing a setting in my UEFI. I guess I'll grab a few screenshots of my settings.

Stupid idea, but try changing the drive letter. Stupid question, have you run diagnostics/defrag on the drive?

I need to double check mine but is it normal to have 2 primary partitions. I'm a little rusty in that part of things.

One primary partition per drive is normal. Also, I have yet to change the drive letter but that was sort of a last-ditch option since I'd have to reorganize a lot of files that I have in programs which would not find the files after I change the drive letter. Apparently A is not very recognizable by Windows because it used to be a floppy or something of some sort? Also, I've ran a full chkdsk and defrag on the HDD, speed increased I'd say by 5 seconds, very marginal.

have you tried plugging the HDD to a different port on the mobo? maybe its a bad plug?

and about the UEFI setting, is the HDD set with the right parameters?

Well, backups are nice. I'm setting up a home NAS to replace my Time Capsule, which just died. This NAS will be able to backup both Windows and Mac computers using a RAID array so if one HDD dies I still have another with all the data on it.

Other nice functions will also include torrent download capability, file server capability, media streaming, FTP service to access my files when I am outside the house... not bad.

Tried different ports, tried different SATA cables as well. I don't why it wouldn't be set with the right parameters, though, I'm not even sure where to find these lol.

it should be in the UEFI Setup. just scroll through the menu's and you'll see it, its pretty obvious lol. but i think that would be my last resort type of deal as it should be auto detected. other than that, i am truly out of ideas i think you hit F2 while its booting.

Reassigned boot drive, no change in boot. Checked every single last possible option in the UEFI and nothing looked out of place, besides the fact that my HDD is not appearing as a boot option in the list of bootable devices, though it is being recognized by my UEFI if that contributes to this slow boot issue in any way...

Perhaps I should just unplug my HDD during boot and plug it back in afterwards
