Mini Richmond review

I spoke to Angelo as well as his supervisor (can't remember his name), and they claim Mini Cooper S can go through 1 Litre of synthetic oil for every 1000 kms.

Is this normal??? :failed:

bcrdukes 10-03-2011 09:56 PM

What's the mileage on your motor?

PhamJam 10-03-2011 10:26 PM

Hey bcrdukes,

2005 Mini Cooper S with 50,xxx kms.

bcrdukes 10-03-2011 11:00 PM

Oh man.

Only 50K on the motor and its consuming 1L of oil/1000km? I can understand if it does that on a higher mileage motor (i.e. 200k+) but at 50K? Something doesn't seem right. :lol

Sorry, PhamJam. Couldn't tell you. Unless there's a service bulletin for that, I don't know what to say. Good luck!

if you are concerned, have them do an excessive oil consumtion report. Angelo is new there and his supervisor is either Jay the service manager or Steve. IF all else fails, write to Kathleen Harding, GM of Mini Richmond and explain your concern.

Hrm...I remember taking my exgf mini in for a warranty repair.....they claimed they drained and refilled all fluids....Discovered that the Power Steering resevoir was completely bone dry.

Never returned till this day.

BMW does have a bulletin that specifies oil consumption for their motors and it's somewhere around the figure you quoted if I remember correctly. The same bulletin also specifies at least twice the amount of consumption for their higher performance engines.

One quart per 1000 km is the norm, even for new cars.

It has always been the standard in the auto industry.

Thanks man - her car isn't actually consuming that much...he just mentioned it as a possibility.

The Mini's have a scheduled (oil change) maintenance of once/year or once/24,000km. Don't you think that, based on this alone, 1000kms is excessive? lol

Yup, my parent's GLK had an oil consumption issue, the MB service rep showed us the MB documentation which stated that as well, can't remember if it was 1 quart or 1L per 1000km.

My dad was quite furious with the service guy, since the car has a 20k oil interchange interval, adding 1L every 1000km to replace what was lost would mean you would never have to change the oil...the service guy was speechless.

In the end, I think they replaced some gaskets under warranty. I've been monitoring the oil levels (surprised a MB still has an oil dip stick) and so far so good.

It is excessive, but it's always been like that in the auto industry. The manufacturer will not call it excessive oil usage if it is under 1 quart per 1000km, it has always been like that.

MPTness 10-23-2011 01:04 PM

run it dry and let them replace the engine

rise08 10-23-2011 01:07 PM

i work at mini and oil change every 24k is normal for these minis
