Sony A & E Lens

I'll admit it... I'm unfamiliar with Sony's A and E mount lenses. I bought an NEX-VG10 and while the stock lens is decent in well lit scenes, it's absolutely shitty when I'm trying to film in low light level situations (F3.5 ain't cutting it).

I'm a sucker for fixed focal point lenses (35mm and 50mm specifically) but seeing as I don't really see a lot of people shooting with Sony cameras, I'm having trouble finding someone to get opinions. So.... Revscene, help!

Is it worth picking up an A or E mount Sony lens or would I be better off simply picking up an adapter mount and sticking with a different brand?

(Sorry, 4am probably isn't the best time to be writing on here... my brain officially shut down an hour ago)

The Sony Zeiss lenses for the A mount are killer lenses, but not many have an aperture of f1.8 or less. The 35mm f1.4 will give you an equivalent field of view as a 50mm would on a full frame camera.

If I were you I'd spend money on the new E-A mount adapter (LAEA2) that comes with the translucent mirror. That one does full on phase detection!!!(Fast autofocus). It's around 450CAD but I think it's worth it when you're shooting film. :)

Like Senna have said the Zeiss offers fantastic glass and so does the G lens. Zeiss has that awesome 24-70mm F2.8 which is quite versatile and have been rated highly. For fixed focal, the A-mount 24mm is quite nice at F2.0.

I'm not a big fan of the NEX lens' at the moment for film as the quality isn't fantastic but the price is nice. If you really wanted to shoot low light, Sony did announce and release an E-mount 50mm F1.8 at 349.99CAD. Should be here in early December. Same goes for the E-mount 24mm F1.8 Zeiss. Get them quick cause there's a long pre order list.

Just a dream but If you some how had some cash, go and grab some Zeiss CP.2s lollll. Those use T-stops and are ballin! Though, if you had the cash you might as well grab yourself the NEX-FS100 too.

You are better off using an A mount (or E if NEX) lens and not using a Canikon lens + adapter. If I remember right, the adapters will not give you auto focusing. As much as I like manual focusing, I can't do it for every single shot.

That said, some A mount lens are not bad:
The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is super sharp with a low price of $4xx.
The Sony Zeiss 16-80 f3.5-4.5 is even sharper than the above, but $6xx
The Sony 50mm f1.4 has good bokeh
The Sony Zeiss 24-70 is so good, but so expensive
The upcoming Sony 16-50 f2.8 has really good reviews too

If you want primes, the 50mm may fit you. Check out dyxum for more reviews. And if you want sample pictures shot with a Sony camera and Sony lens, see my site. I use a Sony a580, SAL50F18 and SAL1680Z.

Correct. Anything other than A/E mount lenses have no focus nor aperature control.

Lomac 10-10-2011 09:48 PM

Yeah, I know about the lack of an AF or aperature control when using a non-A/E lens. To be honest, I'm not too concerned about that. I tend to manual focus pretty much everything anyway.

I saw the DT 50mm F1.8 on Sony's site and, considering the price, am sorely tempted to pre-order one. I'd love to test out the 50mm f1.4, though. Just need to find a local store that actually carries Sony products now... :(

Senna4ever 10-10-2011 10:35 PM

^^^ Sony Store? Lens & shutter also carries a good selection, as does the London Drugs on Steveston Hwy.

Lomac 10-10-2011 10:43 PM

The Sony store by my place sucks. And while I like Lens and Shutter, I've yet to see a single Sony product at their stores (both the Langley and Abbotsford locations).

rageguy 10-10-2011 10:44 PM

Lens and Shutter stopped carrying Sony stuff. Your best bet is Sony Store or maybe Broadway Camera.

skyxx 10-11-2011 02:33 PM

If you do preorder, preorder at the Sony store as the item comes in faster than their Online store.
