| Adding a second internet line?
Does anybody here have experience with Shaw or Telus regarding adding a second connection?
I tried calling Shaw and the guy on the phone told me I had to pay the full amount for the installation of a second line.
I was pretty
because at my work place we have 3 separate lines from the same ISP and my boss tells me the internet bill comes to less than $100 a month; which I suppose, would cover 3 separate lines, but I just wanted to know if anybody else has a separate line and if you get charged the full amount for additional lines.
edit: mods move if this is in the wrong section, i figured there would be more traffic here

Business and home lines are usually different, is the second line for someone living in the other suite? I live in a suite where I got to pay for a second line lol, if u are looking for a second line for the house, best thing is just to run the wire around the house and u should be good to go Posted via RS Mobile |

^do you pay the full price? or did they give you a discount/reduced price for the additional line?
The problem right now is not whether or not I should actually run a line through the house, but whether or not I should get another connection completely.
I have people living in the house that I share the existing connection with that use P2P applications basically non-stop (PPS, Bit Torrents etc.), eating up all the bandwidth. And through peak hours, it gets to the point where I'm getting disconnected every 5 minutes from the already lousy wireless reception that I get.

Why are you paying for this second line? If it's a legal suite they are technically not part of your account and they can get telus/shaw to install their line for free with the activation of internet.

It's not legally rented out.
They're family members who just immigrated here, so they're crashing in our spare rooms for the next couple of months until they could get everything sorted out.
So I figured, if they're going to be here for the foreseeable half a year anyways (potentially), I might as well look into getting a separate connection if it's economically viable, since I'm a pretty heavy internet user anyways, and like I already mentioned, the reception in my room is horrible, and running a wire through the house is not practical in my situation.
Besides, wireless is FTL. |

I ran 2nd line and u have to pay separately no other way around unless u use a router... If u want 2 modems u need 2 lines and 2 bills.. That's how they work. It's unfortunate as I now only have 1 line and cannot bundle it with my tv cause I want my bill separate then ones of my parents.. Even though I got the basement sweet and they have the top... Just a money grab that's it Posted via RS Mobile |

Just like bloodline said. 2 lines, 2 bills.
I have 2 lines in my house. 1 is funny enough in my room, but I don't use it. I tap into the wireless connection off the other line for the laptop. Your SOL thinking Shaw or Telus will "give you a deal" for a second line. They probably do that for a business because they have such high bandwidth requirements, they would rather have the business spread over 3 lines instead of clogging up 1 line and getting tons of complaints from said business.

either way, on your router you can set bandwidth limits. ie. limit bandwidth for certain programs applications. or get their MAC address and limit it that way.. though, i'm not sure if there is a way to get their mac address without using their computer?
This is probably a better solution, or upgrade your connection and get them to pay for it.
ps. I do not know how to do this, but I know it can be done because my friend did it for my friends internet with her tenants.

Besides, wireless is FTL. | If they contiune to use P2P just change the wirless PW so they can't use it. Better routers have better bandwidth management. you might be able to control how much traffic each MAC address gets so you can say set thiers to use less than 50kbs.
Or tell them straight up to stup using P2P or they get no Interent.
I did that to our tenates. They were on vacation for a few months and disconnected their interent and when they come back they said they were going to get it soon but need access now so my dad give them persmission to use our wirless. Since them they have bene usign P2P, and various steaming programs. Which makes the network really slow. So I decided to disconnect the wirless router every night and of coz they would call, I told them straight up they can either stop using any P2P and use ours or they can pay their own. I also mention if they do use ours and if it becoems slow at any point coz of them I will change the wirless pw and they will not allow be on again. After that our Internet is back to normal.
Same with your relatives if they can't live by your rules then they shouldn't be there in the first place. They are usign your Interent which THEY DID NOT PAY so is only fair they follow your rules.

And that is why basement suites suck.
When you want to rent the place, its all: free internet!
When you live there, its all: as long as it doesn't impact my life. Thanks for paying my mortgage, bitch!
If you are going to include internet, then include internet, otherwise, don't. For some reason, people feel that the internet gives them the right to download every movie everywhere, so that's what is going to happen.

Every router these days has QoS built in. Use that to limit traffic to and from your neighbour's computers.

secondary internet with shaw is 9.95 for highspeed or 19.95 for extreme. secondary internet has a separate modem used.

Just have them get their own line and everyone would be happy. Shaw won't waive the installation fee though. My gf's place just installed another line in the basement and had to pay the fee.
Forget about sharing, it's more trouble than worth and shits gonna be so piss slow for them that they'd eventually get a new line anyways. You can limit the bandwidth but I wouldn't do that. Either share everything or they're on their own. Be straight up front always better.

Instead of getting a second line just get the fastest Shaw has available and use POE (power over ethernet). Then if you want connect it to a Wifi router.

i work for telus, a second line is a complete second line for residential.
What you have at work is most likely ONE main line and 2 Overlines, which would be 100 bucks, the internet would be working on the main line and cannot work on the overlines.
most people that have second lines use it specifically for internet and fax only, and the original line in their house is strictly for phone use only.
im sure you can get install for free from telus if you subscribe a second line though. I can put in the order for you too if u like so you dont have to deal with being on hold for over an hour.

wait a second, i dont understand the original post because of the other reply's
do you want a second phone line (second number) coming in?
or a second phone jack installed?
PM me LMK i can probably help you out with either/or.
If you are having problems with other people on the same connection i would say get a completely new dark dsl connection, if you are a student they have deals rite now.
