Well my laser printer finally ran out of toner.

And I realized its cheaper to buy a new printer instead of refilling it for $99

whats a good cheap colour printer?

Does inkjet print just black text fine? or is it mainly used for pictures

Why model printer is it? Because I refill My HP color printer for around $30.

Also new printers only come with starter toner.

IMO, Brother makes the most economical inkjet printers. Lexmark and HP inkjets have expensive replacement cartridges and low yield per cartridge.

The Brother multifunction inkjets have a separate cartridge for black, cyan, magenta and yellow, and the replacement-compatible cartridges are only $3-4 each, with up to 450 pages/cartridge. I have a Samsung monochrome laser printer that has been gathering dust since I used the Brother. A drawback with the Brother inkjets is that they have a daily "cleaning cycle", in which a little ink is drawn out. So over time, the cartridges will deplete even if you don't use the printer (as long as it's plugged in). But with the cost of the cartridges, it's negligible, especially since I only use it to print B&W now. I just leave the empty colour cartridges in the printer. It's even cheaper for me to use the inkjet than the laser for B&W; it's only pennies per page.

I have the MFC-240C, but it's discontinued now.
These look like good choices, with a slightly different cartridge (LC61 vs LC51), but still at $3-4/replacement cartridge:

And if you want to print often in colour... it adds up in cartridges, especially since OEM is the way to go for colour.

I have a Samsung ML-1610 and have had bad experiences with both replacement toner and toner refills - the text was always not as dark as the original toner.

Getting a new printer because starting to need more colour prints now.

I used to go staples and do it but now they switched their system to kiosk style.

No more ripping them off :(

I find I don't print all the time and worry about my inks drying up; therefore I bought an HP colour laser printer when it was on sale at Staples for $100. HP Officejet 8500 is on sale for $139 for the printer. Cheaper to run than a laser and gives you tons of prints per cartridge. Best buy for printers IMO. Also just as fast as a color laser in terms of printing.

$65 for 2000 pages of black (cheaper than laser) and 1400 pages of color using reman catridges.

Brother inkjet printers are terrible. And you do realize that Lexmark has several printers that have $5 FACTORY-MADE cartridges which provide a higher yield than 450 pages, right ?

Would you care to elaborate on how Brother inkjet printers are "terrible"?
My opinion is based on my personal experience with the Brother for three years, printing hundreds of pages of notes and reports for school. I do get the occasional paper jam, but nothing has broken on the printer.

A Lexmark multifunction inkjet that I had before my Samsung laser on the other hand, broke within a year of use when a plastic component in the print head mechanism broke. I didn't bother with Lexmark after that.

A new Lexmark with $5 cartridges? I'd be interested to know what model(s) they are, though I wouldn't buy one personally, after my experience. IMO.

Out of the 3 Brother inkjet MFP that my Aunt has bought, all 3 have broken within 2 years of use. One of them broke 6 months in. It was varied problems. ADF failure, printhead/mechanism failure, and one was demon-possessed.

I have used Canon printers and HP printers a lot (that's what our family owns) and they have been dead reliable for us. My MX320 is 4 years old and still working strong. I had a 10-year old HP MFP that was still alive and kicking but really expensive on ink. We traded it in on a laser MFP that's working good so far, but it's less than a year old so we'll see.

My Samsung laser B&W printer has seen roughly 2 cases (10,000 pages) of paper through it in the last year, and it's done terrific. I refill it myself for $10/refill, and change toner cartridges every 3rd refill for $30 each. Bought the printer for $40 on Craigslist.

The Lexmark with the $6 500-page black cartridge is the Pro901. It's a pretty good printer, and with a 5-year warranty from Lexmark it's a long-lasting one. One of the more popular printers we sell at work.

I used to sell printers for a living and people would come back w/ Brother inkjet printers a lot with problems. The print quality isn't great, the scan quality isn't great, etc. I'm glad you have had good luck with yours, but I wouldn't say your scenario is the norm for their printers. Older Lexmarks, Dells, HP Photosmart/Deskjet, and most Brother inkjet printers were constantly coming back with failures. Brother's professional series printers are fairly good and cheap to operate, but you aren't going to get one of those for <$100.

The Lexmark Pro 805, Pro901, and Pro905 all take a $5 510-page cartridge and, as mentioned in the post above, they come w/ a 5-year warranty. While it certainly isn't common to find them for <$100, it is possible. I've seen the Pro901 drop to $149 w/ 4 x free 510-page black cartridges and a free ream of paper and, with the $50 trade-in promo that was on and a $20 off $150 coupon, it brought the price down to $79 (@ Staples). If you see a similar promo, make SURE they use the $20 off $150 coupon first ($149 + Recycling fee puts it over $150), then have them take the trade-in coupon off. Some cashiers aren't hired for their brains.

First off, the cartridges that come with new printers is only HALF filled.

Secondly, bring your cartridge to those refill places, or google and buy online -- its dead easy to refill. My Samsung cartridge has a plug that I poured the toner into myself. A big bottle was only $9 off eBay.
*Some rare printers can't be refilled though, but do check with those refill places.

so for i.e. canon printers, are there any risks with buying 3rd party cartridges? something to do with the on cartridge chip?

good ink for great prices can't recall exactly but its like $5 a cartridge and if you buy all colours you get nice discount

I bought the colour printer because I need colour prints now and sure enough anything cheap will do, just need it to last 6 months for my sis to finish school lol.

When I got my samsung laser printer it came with a starter toner and I bought another toner kit.
I never knew you can refill it yourself for $10 or something lol.

Sorry if this is off topic. But don't most samsungs have a chip that needs to be reset if you fill it yourself? How is that done?
