Narrows focus to retain smartphone users

Rogers Communications Inc. is narrowing its focus to woo and retain predominantly high-value mobile subscribers, a shift that will leave lower-spending customers for its competitors.

The strategy, evident in the company's latest quarterly results, recognizes that with competition rife in all segments of the $18-billion sector, the country's largest mobile operator cannot hold its lead everywhere - but it can remain in front in the segment poised for the most growth: smartphone customers.

"We have a strategy to go after wireless data and you can read that as a proxy for high-value customers," Nadir Mohamed, chief executive, said on a conference call.

Rogers reported a rise in the number of customers leaving the carrier in the third quarter, called "churn," but did report a better performance in the average revenue in collects per subscriber, which remains under pressure but is at least levelling off from earlier declines.

Taken together, it suggests the carrier is no longer bowing to pressure from customers demanding better rates at the threat of leaving. Moreover, those who are staying are generally spending more than the average user through a smartphone tied to a term contract.

"Obviously, the numbers are important, but equally if not more important is what kind of customers they are," Mohamed said.

On the subscriber-addition front, 74,000 new contract customers were signed up, well down from expectations of more than 100,000.

Wow. Bold move. Nadir Mohamed - this guy is a gangster.

Psykopathik 10-27-2011 06:54 AM

lol "high-value" = stupid :p

props for being honest and telling us the little guys mean shit to you, Rogers.

ShyGuy 10-27-2011 08:46 AM

Good luck with this strategy rogers. I think every consumer whether high or low value is looking for good value. Rogers simply does not provide good value with their services compared to the competition and that will only lead people to move away from their carrier.

Teh Doucher 10-27-2011 09:02 AM

I've stuck it out with rogers simply because of good, reliable service.

this is going to be a catastrophic failure.

GLOW 10-27-2011 09:14 AM

guess they're tired of mob/wind handing their asses to them with their pricing.

i guess they're putting everyone on notice to don't bother calling retentions complaining wind/mob are giving xxx plan

Tapioca 10-27-2011 09:29 AM

I don't know about everyone else, but I pay about 120 bucks for my utilities a month which includes phone service, HDTV and 20 MBPS internet. 45 of that is spent on my phone.

Unless some of you are trying to consolidate your internet and TV service under an unlimited mobile phone plan via tethering, I don't understand why anyone would need unlimited data from a mobile phone provider. I presume that is the big lure to a company such as Mobilicity.

Maybe I'm just not as "social" as the rest of you, but I don't find myself talking or spending lots of time on my phone. What matters to me is reliable service when I need it (and I'm willing to pay a premium for that.) If I need to talk during the day, I have my office phone to take care of that. If I want to invest my time in courting women, I'd rather talk to her in person instead of over the phone or via SMS, whatsapp, etc. I could go on.

The thing is they know they have good reliability in terms of reception, service, and speed. Being a UBC student, gotta have my reception but Mobilicity/WIND ain't gonna be able to provide me with what I need.

Mobilicity/WIND don't have the bands to have iPhone capability and that means all those follow the trend are stuck with the big 3 (I don't know if Bell/Telus has the iPhone but I'm assuming they do...). There's a lot of people using iPhones out there and Rogers knows that these people don't mind dropping $$$ for a new iPhone every few months/paying expensive plans for that tempting 6GB (lol when you can have unlimited data with Mobilicity =/ )

I have an Android so I don't give a crap about iPhones. It would be awesome to jump ship to Mobilicity but they don't seem reliable enough for me at the moment. Damn choices :yuno:

Neva 10-27-2011 09:44 AM

gawd damn i hate rogers. piece of shit they can go and burn

Grandmaster TSE 10-27-2011 11:00 AM

i left them a couple weeks back

!Yaminashi 10-27-2011 11:11 AM

And this is exactly why they're slowly going to go downhill, publicly stating your non high roller customers dont mean anything? Yeah, great strategy guys LOL

FerrariEnzo 10-27-2011 12:31 PM

LMAO their smartphone customers i bet are mostly the Apple Fanboys/girls with their iPhones...

So basically what he's saying is as long as they're all suckas and will throw away a couple hundies for cellular service per month its all good

jackmeister 10-27-2011 01:00 PM

well... someone has to pay for the fancy network upgrades (LTE) and coverage (service out in the boonies...)

although i dont agree with putting into words and getting bad PR for what has been bloody obvious.

Tapioca 10-27-2011 01:13 PM

I don't see a problem with their strategy. They have Fido and Chat-R to compete at the low end.

This reminds me of people who shit on Air Canada all of the time. WestJet is great if you fly like twice a year. But, if you travel more than that, Air Canada isn't so bad. Aeroplan rewards, the Maple Leaf lounge, the availability of first class seating, etc are reasons why they have customers.

They're just stressing the fact that they are a "Premium Brand" and if you will have to pay a premium price for it. Their strategy will work.. because I know too many people out there that don't care how much their plan costs. As long as they have what they want, they don't give a flying fuck.

LOL! Yes! This!

Somebody feels my pain and agony! :D

threezero 10-27-2011 04:00 PM

i hate to admit this the only reason y i'm still with fido is because wind/mobi doesn't do iphone. The moment they do i'm jumping ship.

shenmecar 10-27-2011 04:35 PM

eventually, those BIG SPENDERS will think they're ripped off and leave too.

What a load of shit.

i'm not currently on contract. I don't think I will ever sign a contract again. The only reason why I'm still with fido is for the reason i listed above. I'm just waiting for the right moment.

Until Wind/Mobi can obtain a lower spectrum, I would argue that the jury is out on Rogers' strategy.

FerrariEnzo 10-27-2011 10:57 PM

soon... very soon the auction will happen...
cant wait... after the auction, i think their prices will jump up a bit, hopefully not too much... good thing i got a good plan..

Grandmaster TSE 10-27-2011 11:30 PM

the thing about rogers and fido is that there are so many other fees to pay along with your bill when a lot of other companies dont charge them
