Heavy D Dead at 44 | Music News | Rolling Stone

Heavy D, the former leader of the hip-hop group Heavy D and the Boyz, has died at the age of 44. The rapper was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles earlier this afternoon and was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. PT. Police are investigating his death but there are no signs of foul play.

Heavy D, born Dwight Arrington Myers, broke into the music industry with Living Large, his first record with the Boyz, in 1987. He went on to even greater success with the hit "Now That We Found Love" in 1991, and recorded theme songs for the television series In Loving Color and MADtv. In recent years, D recorded a series of reggae fusion albums.

never heard of him...

SkinnyPupp 11-08-2011 05:35 PM

He's one of those guys that EVERYONE has heard of, but I never really listened to his music. And I was huge into hip hop during the 80's 90's and early 2000's. Just didn't care for it.

RIP nonetheless

RIP.

I think it's kinda understandable for the younger generation to have no clue who Heavy D was, I think his last real hit was like in my last year of highschool in 96 or 97. Kinda like how I have no idea of who half of the artist around now are, god I sound old lol.

RIP. Some good memories, seemed like every elementary/high school party or dance, I recall his tracks bumping.

Zoidberg 11-08-2011 07:34 PM

I thought this would be about some heavy D's :troll:

He was huge back then and then he totally dropped off from the public eye

I saw him do cameos in some movies and music videos recently and the guy looked olllld i thought he was in his late 50s

I was hoping he'd make a surprise comeback :/ especially when he showed up for the BET Awards

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Rapper Heavy D collapsed in his Beverly Hills home Tuesday morning and died a short time later at a Los Angeles hospital, according to police and the coroner. He was 44.

Heavy D, whose real name is Dwight Arrington Myers, was found conscious with difficulty breathing at his home after police were called there at 11:25 a.m., the Beverly Hills police said in a news release.

He was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon, according to Los Angeles County coroner's operations chief Craig Harvey. The cause of death has not been determined, Harvey said.

His hip-hop recording career began in 1987 with his group Heavy D & the Boyz and on his first album he released the hit single "The Overweight Lover's in the House." Another one of his breakthrough hits came in 1991 with a remake of the O'Jays' "Now That We Found Love."

Heavy D's rapping was featured on Janet Jackson's 1990 hit "Alright."

He rapped on Michael Jackson's 1991 hit "Jam," which he performed at last month's Michael Jackson tribute show in Cardiff, Wales.

He also composed and performed the theme songs several television shows, including "In Living Color," "MADtv" and "The Tracy Morgan Show."

His last CD, "Love Opus," was released this year.

Heavy D also pursued an acting career, which included mostly roles on TV shows and movies.

He played a courthouse guard in the Eddie Murphy film "Tower Heist," released last weekend.

He used his Twitter account Monday night to express sadness about the death of boxer Joe Frazier:

"SMOKIN JOE FRAZIER..RIP.. truly one of the best heavyweight champs that ever lived.. GODS SPEED,MR FRAZIER!"

Heavy D's last Twitter message, posted late Monday, was: "BE INSPIRED!"

lol, I still never heard of him. The only big guy I knew was Notorious BIG.
But I'm not surprised, since I don't listen to this kind of music.

Anyway, RIP.

StylinRed 11-09-2011 06:01 AM

^^ u must have heard his music though (maybe u just didnt realize it was him or something?) there's just no way unless you only listened to chinese music back in the 80s/90s :)

i just told my cousin who introduced me to his music about HeavyD dying he and he was like "who???" :lol and then he was like "oh i thought he died decades ago"

so i guess if the music wasn't really important to you (even if you used to listen to it) you could still be like wtf?

AzNightmare 11-09-2011 06:27 AM

lol, maybe I heard his stuff before... none of these Youtube videos ring a bell though.
Back in the 90s, all I listened to was Z95.3 FM.

Heavy D: Determining cause of death likely to take weeks - latimes.com

Quote:

The L.A. County coroner's office said it probably will be six weeks before officials determine the cause of rapper Heavy D's death.

Ed Winter, a coroner's spokesman, said no illegal drugs were found at Heavy D's Beverly Hills home, but a doctor had prescribed him a drug after the rapper, 44, experienced a cough.

The coroner plans toxicology tests, which are common in cases when a relatively young, healthy person dies unexpectedly. An autopsy was expected to occur in the next two days.

"We need to see what's in his system," Winter said.

Winter said Heavy had recently returned from a trip to London.

Heavy D was stricken Tuesday returning to his Beverly Hills condominium after a shopping trip and died a short time later at a hospital, authorities said.

Heavy D experienced breathing problems at his condo complex on Maple Drive and then collapsed.
