Options with Telus modem/built in router?

Asking for a friend, basically he has the typical telus modem/built in router/wireless with the 4 ports in the back

For the last while it's been really bad, like completely dropping the connection for minutes at a time pretty frequently, just a bad overall connection wirelessly

What are the options for running a router with this modem? Obviously the connection
Itself seems to be the issue so he's kind of weary to pick up a router to replace the built in one if it has Somthing to do with the connection from
The modem itself, is there a way to login to the control panel of the telus hardware?

You should be able to login to the modem by going to whatever gateway your computer is pointing to. I believe that should be 192.186.1.254. The default password is admin, or it might be stamped on the bottom of the modem.

did he get the actiontec v1000h? if so, i agree about the wireless connection. absolute garbage. seems to drop connections constantly for the upstairs of my house. u might want to consider switching to another channel. also consider switching channel width from the default 20mhz to 40mhz. didnt help me but seemed to help some other ppl with the same router.

If it's actually a connection problem, then you need to replace the modem and/or have Telus come to check why.

If it's the router portion that's causing the problem, you can look into setting the unit into bridge mode so that it only acts as a modem, and then put your own router behind it.

^the newer telus modem/router combo you can't put it into bridge mode. I looked around for the longest time when my cousin wanted it done and i couldn't find it. Called telus 3 times and got 3 different people telling me it can't be done. what i did was put a router into the dmz zone of the telus router/modem and used my own wireless router

yeah no bridged mode for the actiontec

the wireless is complete garbage even after changing to like channel 1
i have tons of wireless routers though so it's not a problem.

I haven't looked into how to portforward this thing though

How can i make sure my ports are completely open? I remember portforwarding the gateway (modem/router) and the router connected didn't work for me.

I just turned off the WiFi capability and plugged my own router straight in. Seems to be working fine for now..

I totally agree. The wireless is garbage. I still have to run a long ass Cat5 cable, but I've been so lazy.
