Driving to Osoyoos this time of year? Tips?
 

Hey all, I'm leaving for Osoyoos early morn tomorrow. Quickest route would be HWY 1, Crowsnest, BC 3, correct? What sort of weather would you be expecting this time of year and how are the road conditions between Van and Osoyoos? I just don't want to get caught in a bad situation without having my winter tires on, as I will be getting them on Tuesday.. Tips and approximately how long the drive is.

Don't speed to much, keep it around 120 and it should be fine within 4 hours depending on traffic. Forecast is always a magic trick so winter tires would be a great advantage incase... Ps lots of undercover in corollas that way.... GL n have a safe trip

make sure you have good tires and may as well pick up some chains and keep it in your trunk for the hell of it. They are cheap enough and will save you if you get in a situation.

Just keep it 160 average and 220 max and you'll be fine

Tips? Shit man, got you covered:

See the yellow and white lines? Stay in between them.

If they are both white, slow down.

If they are both shiny, slow down.

If you see them through the sunroof, you dun goofed.

#3 HWY runs south though, has anyone had experience taking that route?

Crowsnest hwy is not as high as the coq, but you will need winter tires at least.

The hwy is narrow at points and does have some curves you will have to be careful of. Double check that the hwy is open through manning park (although it rarely closes) and make sure you fill your tank before you go.

After Manning you will start to climb in altitude and will come across some tight turns until you get into Princeton....through the Similkameen valley, you shouldn't have any problem. Another short climb over some hills/mtns until you descend into Osoyoos.

The hwy dudes usually keep the road pretty clean and clear, but plan on taking your time, none the less.

it runs east. if you head south...you have gone the wrong way.

I have driven it dozens of times and use to work in Manning park.

crowsnest is a great scenic drive if you take your time, and an awesome driving road in the summer.

i recommend getting the snow tires on now rather than after. whats stopping you?

a lot of the sections of that highway don't see any sun from the end of september until late march.
all seasons will be shit in temps under 7°C

Before you leave check the highways at DriveBC
Snow tires, chains and cautious driving will get you there safely. Do not race the clock!
Also, bring a camera you'll get some good scenery shots if you leave before sunrise :D

It was a late order. I don't have them on hand, or else of course I would have had them on. :(

Just keep your speed when going up/down the hills.

A buddy of mine totaled his Mazda around this time last year on a trip to okanagan because he was going too fast downhill.

Just got back from osoyoos. No kidding when you guys said nice roads for the summer. Only scary moments were fishtailing and then going sideways on one of the turns in Manning park. The roads were more thoroughly plowed and sanded during the way back. I was quite surprised at how many prius' and smaller cars were on the same route..

that road is beautiful in the summer both to look at and to drive on haha. just sucks when you get stuck with a truck.
