thinking of going diesel, any diesel car owners?
 

just wondering if any diesel car owners are here, i am thinking about going diesel but i got some quesitons... is maintenance the same as gas cars? how reliable are they? is diesel really hard to get off your skin? are all diesel cars slow? what are some good reliable not so slow diesel cars?

i think thats like the only choice, or maybe those old mercedes benz lol...

My Dad bought a new BMW x35d SUV and it's got plenty of power. Not slow at all.

Audi r18 or vw tdi.

We get screwed in na with car diesels. You can boost up those older Benz diesels but it's not worth it. Same with vw tdi 00-03 can get 200hp+ up from 90hp, but really how much do u want to spend?

Maintenance is different - there's no ignition system to worry about. The main things to consider as far as maintenance goes is regular oil changes and air filters and clean fuel with added lubricants.

Warming up a diesel is crucial. They run best when hot. Don't bother if you're doing frequent <15km trips then shutting it down for 2+ hours. It'll waste fuel, clog up intakes, deteriorate oil sooner and build up carbon in your engine. Longer cummutes, road trips and towing are where they excel. Cool down is just as important if it's turbocharged.

If you want something cheap on fuel but don't want to deal with proper warm up/cool down and only do short trips, go get a Civic - you won't see many benefits by going to a diesel and the extra steps will become an annoyance.

golf tdi is so much nicer
new jetta and passat are ugly this time around imo

jetta starts really cheap tho, but once you go tdi its over 30k

I have an 09 Jetta TDI. No problems whatsoever and over 300ft/lbs of torque. Not the most fun car in the world but it definitely gets the job done.

Like others have said, maintenance is not the same

You have to be on top of changing the fuel filter constantly and oil as the injectors are powered by oil pressure

Rented a Grand Cherokee with 3.0L diesel when I was in Edmonton a couple years ago, that was pretty nice. Diesel gives you lots of bottom end torque and insane mileage, especially if you do a lot of highway driving, both reasons big trucks use it.

keep up on oil changes and fuel filters, also get into the habit of running a diesel fuel conditioner every so often. other than that, enjoy the better mileage and bottom end torque if you decide to go diesel.

drove a 335d once, felt boss compared to regular 335i

so much fun
