Where to get winter rims mounted

So I have summer tires on my ride and I need to use the car this weekend. Does anyone know *rough* prices for tire changeover at say:

Kal Tire
Canadian Tire
other place??

I'm in Surrey

Any independent tire shop, but seriously, be there by 6-7am, because there will probably be a line by then.

It's been cold enough for two weeks to get them mounted.

. I'd rather do it myself than trust some kid to do it. Even if they use a torque wrench, you have no idea when it was last re-calibrated.

If you think any of the tire shops use a calibrated torque wrench on your wheels you're kidding yourself. They all use air tools with an approximate torque setting, which is always too much and I have to put a pipe and a breaker bar to loosen my lugs.

$18.50 at Walmart. You'll have to go early and leave your car there for a few hours, appointments are nearly a 2 week wait.

All the shops I've worked for have used torx sticks or a torque wrench (on request)

Same thing when I was in highschool (JO). The SnapOn truck was there at least once a week and I know for a fact all the torque wrenches were checked annually. It really depends on the school and teacher. My teacher was a mechanic for 20+ years and still worked at a tranny shop on the Saturdays. The school participated in highschool drags at Mission and took in customer cars. So there was enough money for proper equipment.

That's stupid... They don't wanna make money?

I called one kaltire in Coquitlam and they wanted $200. While two others wanted $100.

I guess it depends.

for the guys that pay $100 - does it come with a special service of some sort? or is it just remove summer tire - bolt on new tire?

I've had the same experience, they'll also only mount four winter tires to rims, not two. I don't see any advantage to paying a premium for service from Kal Tire, when an independent company often charges less. Aside from that, I would rather give my money to a small business owner than a huge faceless company.

To judge whether my car is in safe hands with an independent shop, I ask three questions:

1. Do your technicians apply anti-seize to the wheel studs or bolt on every car?
2. Do your technicians use a torque stick or wrench to tighten the lug nuts?
3. I drive a civic with 12mm x 1.5mm wheel studs, what will you be torquing the lug nuts too?

If I find all three answers acceptable, I hand them the keys and watch the mechanics work, if I notice they're using an impact without a torque stick and not applying anti-seize, I ask for my keys back and move on.
