i honestly have no idea why people would listen to her, i just figured everyone liked her cuz they thought she was cute

I'm not the biggest fan of GEM but I don't see why there's so much hate.

Things like one "trick pony, don't like her interpretation, I have no idea why people would listen to her."

Seriously find me another HK female artist that has her creativity, vocal range, genre range, interpretation range, and can play the piano and guitar. Please, I've never seen one. She sings in Cantonese, mandarin, and english and writes music and lyrics. I've been quite fed up with almost anything that comes out of HK but this little girl I'm actually really proud of. She set the bar and currently I don't see any male artist even close to that level except for Taiwanese ones.

She wasn't really a big deal before the show but after showing basically the entire Asia what she can do live on stage, I think she's proven to be quite an artist and she deserves the fame. Also it doesn't hurt to look kinda cute with a nice rack. Would you rather the market continue to push out shits like Twins, Stephy, and Sherman?

Its easy to hate but try to think about the total package and appreciate what she can do for this struggling canton market.

i like her a lot, might have came off like "hatred" but its legit criticism

again, her style is solely based on hitting those high notes which is absolutely fine, but it comes to a point where its beyond excessive (it sounds like her voice is gonna go), and even hurts your ears at some point, and she doesn't have full control when it gets that high

her piano is solid, playing since shes been playing since shes 4, shes an average guitar player, if she sings songs where the arrangement is where she isn't belting, shes just average and is in the middle of the pack like the rest of the group

she needs to learn to tone it down, and do more with less, it gets boring time and time again for me, which is why I like watching Shila at times

as for comparing her with other people in the market (HK), shes obviously better, i do agree, but that's because the past 15 years has been pretty lackluster anyways compared to before

theres many peole praising her of her style but also as many people getting sick of her style, very subjective, but based on my interpretation on different mediums it seems to be valid

I really liked her old songs, and still do: All about You, Where did you Go, 等一個他. Wow.. blink of an eye, these songs were from 5 years ago lol.

I wished she re-focused back on Canto songs.. and maybe more songs with the "Get Everyone Moving" theme.

Edit: This is pretty good too

I see your point and understand that your interpretation of her is based on only the show. This is a weekly singing competition that requires votes to get to the next stage. A show like this requires a WOW factor every time you go on stage. She knows the game and tries her best to show off her high notes on every showing which is tough enough. If you watch her concert, you'll find that she probably hits those notes 2 or 3 times only.

I'm sure she knows its excessive but hey people kind of expect that from her every week. That's why she's doing her best to showcase her vast amounts of talents.

what i got from that was basically "there's nothing but crap outta hk and shes the best there is out of that and at least she's not horrible"

i can agree with that but as someone who's older and listens to music from everywhere i'd rather just listen to something else http://forum.blu-ray.com/images/smil...rted/shrug.gif

i know she's older but id rather listen to Ivana Wong (王菀之) that is if i had to choose between the two but if i didn't i wouldn't listen to her either :P (i really only like that one song with jacky :lol)

the thing is why wouldn't you interpret it based only on the show? the target audience is China where she was pretty much unknown before this rise to fame, her predominant HK fans are in the minority now wrt the show, so she now is/ will be known as the girl who screams her ass off

but if anything, in reality this show isn't a "true" singing competition, true freedom of song choice/style/presentation hardly showcases "all" of an artists ability, also consider that the studio audience votes and most if not all probably have no musical background either.... but the show is popular so its a moot point

but, have you not noticed that most of the artists on the show can be just as good/effective at conveying the crowd with different arrangements, whereas GEM falls to the middle when she has a normal, non-belting performance? shes smart to stick to where shes best but it just indirectly shows she falls back on that one style and she has more gaps compared to the other artists, if anything for me her ability as "performer" is what makes her superior her from the rest, but a lot of the other artists have a more passive approach, she NEEDS that "wow" factor every week for votes, you can't say the same about the other artists
