Trading in for the "same" car - what should I expect to get?
 

Hi,

I'm thinking of trading in my 2007 TSX auto for one with a manual and all the ones I've found are at dealerships and I'm wondering what I should expect in terms of trade-in value. Part of the reason I ask is that all the ones I've seen so far are higher mileage than mine (mine is 36k, theirs are usually 65-75k) - theirs are selling for around $19-22k

Is it reasonable to ask for a straight trade or should I be expecting to put some money in? If so, how much is reasonable? I'm guessing I can't ask for money back since mine is worth more.

Sorry if this is a dumb question - I've never traded in a car before particularly when it's basically the same car.

The dealer needs to make some money, so you'll never get 'market value' for your trade-in, or else dealers would just go bankrupt.
To calculate roughly how much money you need to add, just calculate the difference between your car's blackbook value and the dealership's lot price.

A private sale/trade would be a better option for you, however no one is going to just do you a favour and trade cars. You want something (manual) and you need to give up something too. So you might need to do a private trade of your car (36K KMs) for a MT car with 66K KMs.

Thanks. One more question - as I understand it, when I trade the car in I offset the sale price for HST purposes. Is that correct? That's partly why I figured I'd trade rather than sell then buy, I'd probably wouldn't have to put in more than a couple thousand in that case I think.

yes the portion that's paid by your old trade-in becomes tax free.

Only the difference is taxable.

I traded in my fully loaded auto Evo for a manual one. Lost a bunch of money and options, but no regrets. I will never buy an automatic car again unless it's an EV. You simply missed the point of fun by choosing auto/twin clutches.

just pretend its a manual....park in N with hand brake up and pop in N and give it a lil gas to pretend like your downshifting...thats what i do :alone:

That might be true for an Evo, but the TSX isn't meant to be a sports/performance car. It's just a nice comfortable ride.
If I was the OP, I would rather drive the auto TSX and use my right hand to feel the 20-30 $100 bills in my pocket.

That might be true except for the 6spd gearbox in the TSX is a total pleasure to drive. Short throws, perfect shift knob, it's one of my favourites.

There's nothing wrong with being stuck in traffic with a manual...I have never understood why everyone whines and bitches about how they suck in traffic.

put in first gear, move 5 ft, come to a stop... do this again for hours... you dont get tired of that shit?

I'm with Over9k, I've never understood why people complain about manual in traffic.
If you're old or got a bad knee, then sure. I've done it everyday for years. I got to drive my friend's M3 recently. And to be perfectly honest, driving stick in traffic was more fun than blasting around in his dct M3. It's a shame hardly any sport cars in Van these days are bought with the stick.

i drove an auto, and was scared away by all the "inconveniences" of driving a manual..but after switching to one, i feel like i won't ever go back to auto. Traffic is not as bad as it sounds either...
i traded my auto mazda 3 for a manual mazdaspeed 3. DO IT
but definitely sell it privately...trading it in would not be the best option.

I am with Over9K and wstce92 on this. I have no problem with driving manual in traffic. The shift is second nature.

Stop and go traffic is no problem don't know why people complain so much. The problem is stop and go driving in a hilly area... now that is a pain.

For sports cars or sporty cars a manual is the only way to go. For luxury cars I'd like a manual but wouldn't mind an auto. SUVs and vans aren't made for driving pleasure so auto all the way.

I think the tsx is a car where the driving can be enhanced by having a manual. You just have so much more control and involvement. Honda manual transmissions are so enjoyable too I never or rarely think of it as a chore. If you can get a straight trade then great. Or maybe you adding $1,000 to $2,000 would be reasonable?

After driving stick for almost 3 years, it's safe to say I like it more than driving an automatic...not that I have problems with automatic transmission. I almost sold my car for a MKV R32, but GODDAMN HEEL-TOE IS FUCKING AWESOME.

Seriously, learn how to heel-toe, it will exponentially increase your driving enjoyment. I am surprised how many manual drivers don't know how to do it...hell some don't even rev-match downshift.:yuno:

I don't heel toe during everyday driving lol..... rev-match down shift err day though.... then everybody looks at me like "why is this fucking ricer revving his engine before he stops at the red light" w.e

Yeah, I don't mind manual in traffic and I find it offers more control at slow speeds. Bottom line for myself is that any car in manual will always be more fun even if all you're doing is driving to and from work. You just can't replicate the joy of a perfect heel toe revmatch downshift with the auto options. And I'll say this, the 370Z's syncro matching manual is blasphemy! If you have a 370Z, you better be driving with that feature off!!!

But yeah, get that manual TSX if it's what you rather have. You're probably going to lose some money either way, but there are always better ways to save money. You could take the bus :troll:

everyone that is bitching about driving manual are the ones who own automatic 350z's or Auto rsx(" i dont need the extra 40 horses in a type S, omg clutching in all day....omg traffic...so annoying, i rather have auto do all the work")

for most people once ur driving manual u wouldnt want to go back to a boring auto, unless its a luxury 4 door.

Ha, yeah, I'm manual all the way. My shitty work truck is a manual and its the only saving grace. I drive that thing around town like its a ferrari just purely for the transmission. Rev match down shifts and the whole thing.

Get in the girlfriends truck and its so boring...point and shoot.
