Higgs Boson particle So if you're even more nerdy than me you probably already know about this, but scientists have found "strong evidence" of a new particle - Higgs Boson. Who cares right? Well if it ends up being true, it is a pretty important thing in physics. This article at mash does a great job of explaining why it is/may be such a big deal Why the Higgs Boson Announcement Matters Basically... if we find the Higgs, science will in one fell swoop: -Essentially complete and affirm Standard Model particle physics. -Show how particles acquire mass. -Put the Higgs field on solid ground for further study. Once the Higgs boson is confirmed, which scientists seem to agree will likely happen by the end of next year, it’ll be huge — even though, as scientific discoveries go, it’s not as grand a milestone as the confirmation of Einstein’s theory of relativity. But just as relativity up-ended classical conventions about physics, the existence of the Higgs will rule out some theories and point us further toward how the universe really works. :nicethread: |
read about this the other day passingly they rated it a 3.5 on their scale they wont be certain until its a 5 and they still expect a couple years of research or something to confirm for what they just saw meh :) |
I thought the title read "huge bosom article". Needless to say, I was a little let down when I came in...... All I want to know now is, will Higgs-Boson make my cel phone any smaller? |
For some strange reason, I was thinking/imagining a well endowed, British Barmaid. I blame those Knave magazines I used to sneak a peek at when I was 10, LOLOLOL. OK, more like 12....... corner convenience stores, FTW! I see they cover up those magazines nowadays. Attempt to stop corrupting little minds - now we have Internet instead. Hee hee....... |
The talk of Higgs Boson has been for a long long time. As much as I appreciate the work of these physicsts, I think it is a bottomless pit to dump money into like carbon nanotubes or other sub-atomic applications. The slides in the article reminded me of the mindfucks I had during the bosons and fermions lectures as an undergrad. |
I dunno I thought it was cool  Oh well, if people came in here looking for HUGE BOSOM, we would't want to leave them disappointed: Spoiler! |
haha i'm pretty nerdy I knew about the announcement several days ago I have CERN on my twitter :alonehappy: pretty exciting year for science |
