Just go to Costco's.
The time and gas you spend driving there and back wouldn't even be worth it unless you're buying large quantities.

Under 48 hrs and you'll have to pay duty. Unless you're filling your car's trunk with 'em you'll probably only have to kick a few extra bucks to the feds for each carton you bring back.

Just make sure to be honest.

If you are buying anything made by Imperial Tobacco like players or Du Maurier Costco's not the cheapest.

Park car by the parking lot next to the duty free shops at the truck crossing
Go to duty free shop buy tax free smokes, 2 cartoons for $98
Walk back to your parked car and just turn back home?

Anyone ever tried that?

Located in Nanaimo. If you are ever down let me know. Check your local independent convenience stores many have very aggressive pricing.

fliptuner 12-18-2011 11:28 AM

Ahh..lol. I didn't check your 20.

There might be more tax, being on the mainland. Just like how your gas is sub $1.00 right now (so jelly), we're still at $1.22ish.

Most family run corner stores around here sell smokes for $11/pack and up, which is why I just go to RCSS.

Also, be careful when you buy smokes at the duty free or anywhere in the States for that matter. A lot of times they're pretty old stock. Last time I bought a carton of DuMo's at the truck crossing (2 months ago), they didn't even have the fresh-seal packages yet. We've had them for around a year now.

Our gas is 121.9 and the tax on smokes is the same.

That's weird, a few guys on some other boards were reporting 97.9 in Vic and such. I guess the base price for smokes is just cheaper there.

Price varies up and down the island. Nanaimo is 121.9. Price of smokes depends on store. Some stores have a low price but sell a high volume of smokes others make more money per pack up sell less volume.

It's more than just a "few extra bucks". I don't know the exact calculations, but after the special duty on cigarettes and your usual taxes, it may be double the price of what you originally paid or more.
