Car wont start; Makes rapid clicking noises
 

- I haven’t insured my car since October (3 months ago).
- Purchased a brand new battery in August.
- Car is in storage in garage and I run the batter every 3-4 days.

So today I can’t start it up. When I turn on the ignition, the car makes a rapid clicking noise. I haven’t tried jumpstarting yet. Anyone have an idea if it is the starter, spark plugs, starter, alternator, or is it just the batteries? Looking for tips, ideas, and/or suggestions.

Sounds like the battery needs a good charge.
Letting the car idle for 15 minutes every few days isn't enough of a charge to keep the battery topped up.

Just unplug the battery and get a battery tender to keep the charge topped up.

But the worst problem is all that starting with the oil in the oil pan = metal on metal during start up and the car doesn't get hot enough and you will have water pooling in the exhaust which will lead to premature rusting of the exhaust.

I had this on my car several times. Turns out my negative terminal was loose, so check the connections !

Why run the car every 3-4 days, why not just run a trickle charger.

And hope it's stored properly.

Dead battery or loose connection. When you store your car for an extended length of time it doesnt hurt to disconnect the battery to prevent it from going dead.

Probably loose connection. Happened to me a few weeks ago. Took out both ends to the battery and tightened them. Fixed the problem.

Charge the battery. Check battery cables for looseness or corrosion. My battery cable to the negative post was corroded causing the same clicking.

Using the battery tender sounds like a good suggestion.

Checked the cables for looseness... looks okay. Going to have to jumpstart over the weekend with another available car. What you think of those self-boosting/jumpstart devices? Has anyone used one?

I was told by someone that it is bad to just take out the car battery and let it sit; the battery will drain and also battery life decreases? Is this true?

The battery should actually charge better when it's disconnected and out of the car. Might have to reset your clock, etc after you put it back in. I wouldn't bother spending money on jumpstart devices. A trickle charger is a better investment.

when you store a car, you can still keep the battery in the car. just have the negative cable disconnected. and whenever you decide to drive the car, clean the inside of the (-) battery terminal and also the outside of the battery post before you connect it.

leaving the battery on the ground is okay. as long as it's undercover and you have a piece of wood or any type of insulation seperating the battery to the floor. doing so prevents moisture from creating a ground between the cement and your battery, which may cause a drain.

battery boosters become handy, especially for situations like this! works the same as getting a jumpstart from another car.

when leaving a battery on the ground, it's actually the temperature difference that causes a battery to discharge. more often on concrete since it has the greatest difference. they don't actually ground out

no. temperature=temperature. the batteries discharge has nothing to do with moisture. besides, the cells in a car battery are protected by a thick plastic case. moisture from underneath would have no effect. electrons don't flow through the bottom of the battery. they flow though the anode and cathode

this is for sure the battery.

check your battery connections and battery voltage.

its sound like the battery but i could be the starter/starter solinoid if you have a spare battery or jumper cables try that and if it starts fine you know its that battery if not then you have a different starting system problem
