Helping Me Choosing a Breed Hi Guys, I want to adopt a puppy which will be my companion in my apartment. My criteria would be: - little shed - small size - can be a lapdog - easy to train - require a little exercise I was thinking a breed that I had before: Pomeranian; or getting another breed: Papillon, Yorkie, or Westie. Which breed should be a good choice for me? If you think other breeds that I don't list above, please feel free to chip in some comments since I have limited knowledge about other breeds. Thanks |
I have a yorkie, and I think it would fit your criteria. They are a little difficult to train because of their personality, but if you put in a half decent effort it shouldnt be a problem. |
Thanks Mike for your input. How stubborn is your yorkie? Also, I just found that Norfolk and Norwich terriers are so cute and smart. Anyone knows about these breeds? |
I say for training purposes only a pom would be great I have one hes around 3 years old now my gf and I trained him well! He does tricks and he is very obiedient...when he wants to be haha but for shedding well lets just say he sheds alot but its ok... |

Considered a chihuahua? Seems to fit everything you described above. Most of the year, they don't shed very much... but for a period of a few weeks a couple times a year, they shed a bit more. They're small, and mine loves to snuggle. She was an apartment dog, so we trained her to only go on training pads in the washroom, and we rarely took her out for walks. We trained her to do quite a few tricks... Of course, every dog is different, but the chihuahua we have is great. |

I own a Miniature Pinscher x Toy Poodle mix. He's a smart little guy who doesn't shed a bunch, weighs 15 pounds, and is very easy to train. I try to take him out at least twice a day, but he's house trained and can easily get by going once a day. I love the little guy. Westie and Yorkie are excellent choices. You could also look at muts. My brother has a yorkie/poodle and he's amazing. |

Always love the mutts... Groucho is toy poodle x pom x mini dachshund, just under 5lbs, easily the smartest of the three: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3019958_n.jpg Don't get too hung up on breeds other than with regards to "required" traits like low-shed, etc. Find a dog that you really "click" with. If you can, get a rescue - lots of times the staff at the rescue center will have a better idea of the dog's temperament and aptitudes, things you won't know in advance with a puppy. |
maltese and poodles are non-shedding and are hypo-allergenic and then there are the malti-poos |
I would say no chiwawa. No offensive here. I just had bad experiences from these two breeds. They both are not shedding, and pretty sensitive to strangers. LOL~ |

Boston Terrier. Not sure if that is small enough for you - they are 15 to 25lbs. My BT is on the big side and is 25lbs, but has no problem sitting on anyone and everyone lol. |
French Bulldog! This is mine: http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6034/dsc0576g.jpg -sheds very little -can be a lapdog -a relatively small dog, he stands at about 16" tall but he does weigh about 30lbs since theyre are thick boned and quite muscular breed -not super energetic, he just sleeps around all day, so not too much excersise -not hard to train but super stubborn lol (he will only work for food) |

Daisy (sister from the same litter) got the pointy Pom nose with the long straight Yorkie hair, but she has a fluffy Pom undercoat. They both have the tightly-curled Pom tail. That's the great thing about mutts though - you never know exactly what you're going to get, which genes will assert themselves, and you can get completely different-looking dogs from the same parents. |
I thought I read in your first post something in regards to little exercise. If you are wanting a lower energy breed I would stay away from the Terriers. Something like a shih tzu, maltese, pom, yorkie, cavalier are good breeds. They have energy but aren't as tenacious as terriers (it's how they were developed to be as vermin hunters). I've had a shih tzu, boston terrier, belgian shepherd, great dane, and now a cavalier. All dogs are different but the shih tzu and cavalier are pretty mellow breeds. |
