what's the implication of SOPA on canadians?

yes I know majority of the sites that i'm on are american....but will is it likely we'll see our federal gov't passing a similar bill?

7seven 01-18-2012 10:20 AM

I agree that something needs to be done about online piracy, the illegal downloading/sharing for media content is just getting out of control these days. However as much as I support the need for stiffer punishment and controls I cannot support SOPA because it is too broad in its powers and definitions, it needs to be amended.

Death2Theft 01-18-2012 11:23 AM

Sneaky bastards trying to pass this again.

TheKingdom2000 01-18-2012 12:02 PM

This always puzzled me...
Why is there ALWAYS lag when they do interviews like this? This is for ANY show on TV.
Shouldn't they have technology that is better than this?
I mean, when I skype with my GF there isn't any lag (well, doesn't appear to be anyway)?

This is especially noted at the very end of the OP youtube video...

It's never any fun to be the only one at the party. It would only be a matter of time.

I agree entirely. I hate when someone tells me that they never go out to see movies and they download all of them. You're stealing a lot of business away from an industry that "Needs" that money. Soon, everyone will be pirating and watching movies for free if something critical isn't done. Unfortunately SOPA is trying to regulate everything on the internet, when it should only be working to shut down the problematic file sharing site. Anything where ILLEGAL activity is happening should be shut down at the people responsible should be punished. Places like piratebay and limewire. Lets say someone uploads tramsformers onto piratebay. Why isn't it legal to go and arrest him? He does not have copyrighted permission to upload it and therefore he should be punished? Why is it not that simple?

RRxtar 01-18-2012 04:16 PM

my feelings 100%

N.V.M. 01-18-2012 05:02 PM

i was just watching the news and Canada has plans of its own in this issue. Bill C11 is just the start of copyright reform in this country. to me it looks like every possible corporation, business, conglomerate will be backing this bill.

If SOPA gets passed you bet the rest of the world (including Canada) will start passing these kinds of laws because the US will make them. The entire western world is controlled by Washington.

The scary thing about SOPA is that once it gets implemented, the US gov't will use it to censor any site that it doesn't like (ie. anything related to Occupy Wall Street). Also, they will keep expanding and adding new laws like SOPA until the entire internet is censored like China. Once that happens, the people of the world will loose their only free outlet of information and communication. Without a free internet, we cannot know the truth, we will only know what the overlords (gov't/corporations/media) want us to know. It will be exactly like China and Iran.

We must put a stop to SOPA now and not let it spread.

PS. About pirating, those who pirate wouldn't have spent the money to watch all those movies/music they stole anyways. It's a moot point. And besides, these studios are "losing" money not because of the internet, it's because they're stuck in the past with their out-dated business models. Instead of innovating, they just want to be greedy and lazy.

Case in point, iTunes is now the #1 music retailer in the US. This is how you get with the times, you innovate, you don't lobby the gov't to do the work for you.

50 Cent is another example, he could see early in his career that the music industry losing money because they were outmoded so he devised his own business strategy which was to use his music to make him famous but his real money would come from selling/merchandising his name (50 cent) and that of his companies like G-Unit.

PPS. The studios and their CEOs have been making record profits in the past few years, so don't be conned into thinking that they're in any financial "trouble" because of the internet.

Excelsis 01-18-2012 06:27 PM

how long is RS going to stay censored?

greendb7 01-18-2012 06:32 PM

Isn't it just for today?

SkinnyPupp 01-18-2012 06:51 PM

Yes, just for the 18th
