CIBC Advantage Visa Debit Card So I am turning 19 mid February and will not be able to use my TD youth account soon. Turns out that CIBC and Coast Capital are like the only financial institutes with a free unlimited transaction student chequing account. After some more searching I decided to go with CIBC as they have this Advantage Card which is a Visa Debit card (more common in the US). However when I got home I couldn't even get it to work with Paypal. People online have been saying that it's supposed to be working now but I am still getting this error: "his credit card has been denied by the bank that issued your credit card. For details on why your card was denied, please contact your credit card issuer's customer service department. Or, you may want to try adding a different credit card." I'm going to call the CIBC Rep tomorrow to figure this out.. but has anyone else have experience with this card? |
Vancity goes up to 25 years old, with unlimited translations. And if you maintain usually $3000-5000 in your bank account, most of the big bank will waive your monthly fee, even if you're not a 'youth' anymore. |
Go to any Credit Union, much better service, lower rates and a greater selection of atms. /thread. |

You know, you can set Paypal up directly to your bank account, you don't need to have it go through your visa. If you don't want to do that for what ever reason, contact the credit card handler directly (the number is on the back of the card) and talk to the customer services people there. They my block that for a reason. |
Okay I tried to add it again just now and it worked! Thanks for the input guys |
PC is free, and you can use all CIBC's atms (it is CIBC banking) as for credit card, just get a $500 student one they give out at UBC or where ever |

CIBC will waive all fees if you have $2000 minimum in the bank anything lower and they will automatically charge fees. Since your 19 why don't you get a credit card? I always feel uneasy leaving my bank info on paypal. What if one day someone got access to your paypal and cleared out your bank account since it doesnt have protection like visa |

EVERYONE should have liquid cash to cover their minimum costs for 3-6 months as a safety net, as the worst can happen. I would put money on less than 50% of ppl in vancouver have that people are generally stupid, idiotic, etc. with money, that's all also, teh posts above said specifically ppl not affording the mortgage or repayment of family loan on their house - clearly they are unwise (more pc of a term for you all) for putting ALL their money into 1 asset - EXTREMELY high risk you needn't worry about my level of intelligence, income, or bank balance - i work hard, make smart decisions, and don't take HUGE risks (We all need a little risk to make investing exciting), thus affording a lot of pleasures in my life that these 'UBC/SFU grads' won't ever have (and honestly, graduating UBC/SFU is a first step, not something to think you can sit back and afford life with - what do you get with an undergrad? $45K per year? (and yes, i started at less than that when i graduated)) i'll get flamed for this, but i don't care, if it makes 1 person think slightly more about their financial position and teh fact that they may need to save more, invest more, take on less high risk credit, work harder, increase their education, i've made the world a much better place |
it's unfortunate that people pay so much money to get a good education (in hopes of getting a good job and making a good living), but do not take the time to learn how to handle their money. |
