As gdoh pointed out, as soon as he saw you had to use a Facebook account to post a comment, he didn't bother.

If that happened, I'd just stop using the forums altogether. I don't have a facebook account, nor do I care to ever create one.

Normally I wouldn't care if people knew my real name, but because I discuss work stuff in some of the threads, it could jeopardize a few things...

freakshow 01-26-2012 09:25 PM

It works in some forums that are small niche communities and intend to stay that way. Usually people in those settings are also more mature and respect each other and their privacy. I wouldn't recommend it for RS.

Reallly?? Fuck the whole point of WoW is to lose your real self in an online persona.

Regardless it was just for fun, otherwise there's 38 Tommii Wongs. :)

using my real name keeps me honest.

cctw 01-26-2012 09:54 PM

you can't 100% confirm that people are using their real names either..

how many of you would believe a guy if he told you his name was Meta World Peace? :lawl:

twitchyzero 01-26-2012 10:03 PM

do you really want your future boss to see what you post in fucked up shit that makes you laugh thread?

I don't see the point of this. And why would anyone want to use their real name?
Even then, there's probably a million people with the same first and last name.

This isn't like credit card with ebay and stuff, and even eBay uses nicknames anyway.

MelonBoy 01-26-2012 11:44 PM

Real names = no more trolling :(

(PPL who get really worked out over the interweb might rage hunt down/stalk...)

Oh yeah, I'm also online and posting during work hours 90% of the time. Forgot about that lol.

Did you read before replying?

Many news sites are using Facebook accounts for commenting, which means I can click on any commenter and be taken to their Facebook page. Sure they could setup a fake FB account just to troll comments, yet most don't.

So even with the same name, you could still find exactly who that person is.

And then what are you going to do? Post on their facebook wall that they were being mean to you on CNN or revscene?

I don't think linking the comments to fb had as much to do with moderation as it did with integrating their sites to social media. Also makes it easier to log in to leave comments which brings more users blah blah web 2.0 talking points blah.

iEatClams 01-27-2012 09:59 PM

I dont take much stock into usernames.

I think when I created a username for RS way back I just chose anything really. azndude was already taken so I'm thinking I was probably looking at porn at the time, and so 69 it was.

I could be 12345678 for all I care.

Gridlock 01-27-2012 10:00 PM

And I'm sorry to bring this up, but a guy that calls people an "uneducated cunt" is actually starting a thread about more accountability on a forum by using your real names?

Still hung up on that I see. Go back and read the thread, it was a sarcastic response to dino's "opinioned dick" comment which she hasn't harped on nearly as much as you.

Interesting to see who wears the pants, and who gets their panties in a bunch in your relationship.

That said, I'm easy to find since I use a version of my real name, use the same handle everywhere, and drive a car very easy to spot. I have no problems being accountable for the words I use - I bet you wouldn't be, and I bet you wouldn't say half the shit you write in real life.

Its not for me, its for the next person who might google them and follow the trail of terrible comments from their bookface profile. Imagine getting access to you new partner's profile, only to find a series of racist, sexist, bigoted, or just plain "not so smart" comments.

Public perception and social stigma keeps a lot of people inline. As I said above, I bet you wouldn't say half what you do online in real life.

The reason to integrate it to social media is to have the comment not only on a news site, users will proliferate it via their social profiles to even more readers.

Which brings me back to my point above - dinosaur clearly says she does not want some comments on here being made available to people she does business with, thus she wouldn't want them linked to her social profile - which summed up means: "I don't want to be accountable for what I say".

Thats actually not what I mean.

I have no problem with people reading my thoughts and opinions. I am the same person IRL that I am on RS....opinionated, sarcastic, and a little bitchy sometimes (shocking, I know). I always stand behind what I say.

If Grid had not started the "Rental Horror Stories" thread, I would have no problem sharing my name and what ever else people wanted to know. Wanna see my facebook? sure. Pictures? sure. I don't really care, but it is a little different when Grid has been discussing specific people/tenants. It should be noted that he doesn't use their real names either.

I must reiterate, I do not care if my clients, owners, tenants, friends, family, strangers, etc. read my thought and opinions. I stand behind all of it.... drugs, drinking, racism, current events, politics, religion, future clients, employers, music I listen to, TV shows that I watch, etc...I have the same opinions on RS as I do IRL.

The only reason I don't share my name is to protect the privacy of my tenants.

Yep.

Actually, way back when I had my Talon BCDSM used to use real names so that people would be less douchey and so that people who knew each other would actually know each other. I used to have another username, but I figured there'd be no reason not to use my real name.

Sure, it's entirely possible that there's some disgustingly horrible skeletons in my closet...but if they were really that big, I'd probably have people hunting me down whether I used my real name on RS or not.
