looks like the deck of the new port mann bridge will be the 6th longest cable stayed bridge and the widest long bridge in the world.

They only added four more lanes?
Are they serious? Why????

They should add at least 6 lanes.

Good photos of all the work being done. It's alwas neat seeing things from a different perspective, especially when it's this big.
+1
it hasn't been easy for hwy1 commuters like myself, but it'd be great once its finally done

umm, aren't they twinning the port mann bridge? that means, the new one will sit along side the current bridge. the port mann is NOT being torn down as far as I know.

naw its getting demolished thats why people wanted to try and turn it into a concrete park

imo I think they should find some use for it... like an exclusive emergency lane or delivery trucks only lane; seems like such a waste

That was the original plan. It will be demolished.

The whole twinning thing was classic. That was always the plan, then suddenly it changed.

I believe the statement was, "the developer said y'kno, we could just build a whole new bridge at nearly twice the price."

And the liberals were like, fuck yeah!

And so a 60 year bridge gets demolished with 40 years of operational life left to it.

Man... The Lougheed interchange construction looks even more fucked up from the air than it does on the ground. I know I said it before, but I'll say it again: Mad props to the person/people in charge of making sure where and when to move the roads and overpasses so far ahead of time.

If they could shut down the entire highway they could have had all the work done(excluding the bridge) in a year with their current work force.
A lot of people dont really realize what goes in to big construction projects like this. If everything went perfectly it would also be done fast... but it doesnt... then its a matter of coming up with a plan to fix the problem and getting approval to make changes..
As an example... The project I'm working on has 2 huge buildings that are coolers.. there are vents that they can open and close to get more or less air into the buildings and there are these 20 lb actuators that do that job.. the brackets we had to mount those werent machined quite right... there is almost no stress on them even when they operate the actuators so it should be really simple to just modify the brackets with a zip cut and throw them on..
no.. we had to come up with a plan... then cut one bracket and take pictures to send to Worley Parson's engineering to approve. Then another copy gets sent to Suncor for approval...
In all a 30 minute fix took us a week before we could do it.

I cant imagine how much of a headache something like this would be.

The bridge looked like it was in serious disrepair. Hopefully this bridge lasts 100 years. If it doesn't then I'm gonna be waving my fist in anger when they replace it in 60 years.

I remember as a kid, POCO was the boonies. My parents had some friends out there, and when we would go visit it was like "We have to drive ALLLLLL the way out to POCO".
