Importing a vehicle from the UK/Europe - anyone with experience?

Hi Revscene!

I am entertaining the idea of importing a vehicle from the UK/Ireland/Scotland area. In my preliminary research I have found that this type of import would work the same as a Japan import. 15 year rule applies. The only example of this I have found is a Citreon club in Ottawa has imported certain Citreon models(15 years old) into Canada. Rotterdam to Halifax is the route and the vehicle was "roll on, roll off" meaning driven onto the boat and driven off at teh Canada port. This will save on container fees which can get costly.

Just seeing if anyone on here has any further info or links(besides riv.ca) that will point me in the right direction. I did a search on here but didn't find anything other than JDM or USA importation info.

The car in question: 1998 UKDM Honda Type R in Milano Red.

Thanks for looking :)

There are some guys locally (and some used to post on here) that imported Cosworths... maybe look around for where those guys might be posting might not be on RS but maybe a Ford msg forum or something?

I don't think the actual process is any different than JDM's... except that you have to figure out how to get the car across Canada whereas JDM's come straight to port here.

Yup, process is basically the same as importing from Japan. The difference is that most transport ships from the UK go to an Eastern port, so you'll have to look into getting it shipped via rail once it hits PEI.

werent rules relaxed a year or so ago for european imports compared to japan?

Keep us posted on your process! I would love to import a UK-spec Accord Type R

Yeah, same here, I'm curious to know, as a Lotus Carlton is on my list of cars to own!

Thanx for the responses guys!! Since they go by date of manufacture it's likely that most 1998 models were produced 6 months prior meaning that they would be eligable by June 2012.

I'll update this thread as I gather info.

I looked at getting an E30 BMW from Germany awhile ago, and if you send it by container its about $3000, but thats a full 40" container. So if you can get another person to split it, and fill it with extra parts, it can actually be a good deal.

Even better, go buy the car in person, race it on some proper racetracks in the UK, then bring it back to Canada.

I always wanted a Ford Sierra sedan from Europe, or even a EU-spec Volvo 850R since they're limited production. I guess the shipping cost would be the same or maybe a bit more expensive coming across the Atlantic.

Wanted to bump this thread and see if you ended up importing from the UK?

I've looked at defenders for a while here and such better deals purchasing from the UK and
importing than the prices locally.

I have not proceeded with anything at this point. Couldn't lock down the exact car I wanted and now the exchange rates are not desirable enough to pull the trigger.
