what is apple tv?
school me on it . im a noob

is it worth getting?

what is the going rate on a jailbroken one?

mb_ 02-07-2012 08:32 PM

is it worth getting?

no

Hondaracer 02-07-2012 09:00 PM

its only worth it it's youve got a bunch of i devices i'd say, its kinda cool to play music, videos, etc. from whatever your device is basically instantly/seemlessly onto your home theatre

i heard on the radio today apple is planning to launch apple TV 2, but i didnt hear the specifics

based on the little ive used it the downsides I saw within a few minutes of use which i didnt like

no 1080p streaming

and when you are showing pictures from a device, you cannot zoom in on pictures on the TV as you would on your device, that was kind of a major thing i thought would be a awsome feature if they could do it

rageguy 02-07-2012 09:00 PM

It is worth getting if you like some or all of the following:
- Netflix
- Watching HD trailers
- Renting movies via iTunes because you don't like piracy
- Playing media from your iPad/iPhone straight to your TV because you felt like it
- Active subscriber of NHL Centre Ice

Jailbreak can be done by yourself, there is no "going rate" for one. Just buy a AppleTV off Craigslist. The median should be $90 to 100.

worth getting ? no

theres definitely better options out there, especially if you do not have Apple devices (iPhone, iPad...etc).

We have one for presentations. Rather than having the cable attached to our iPhone or iPad. we can wireless control what we have from our iPad to our tv.

Other than that, i only use VIMEO or Youtube from time to time.

jACEDesignsLtd 02-07-2012 10:51 PM

Are you talking about Apple Television? Coz I heard they are going to make one..

but if you are referring to the Apple TV .. the small black module, then imo I think it's worth getting. I bit torrent TV shows and movies and convert them into itunes. Then I stream it to my flatscreen and voila... I barely watch regular TV anymore

twitchyzero 02-07-2012 11:19 PM

no 1080p should be a deal breaker for most people...almost no excuse not to include it as a modern day media player.

Havo 02-07-2012 11:29 PM

A lot of RFDers jailbreak them and put on XB Dashboards on theirs. Not too sure of the exact details but theres certainly a big cult following with them after the JB.

Hehe 02-08-2012 12:12 AM

Without JB: stay away from it unless you plan to use it as an itunes player.

With JB: considering all the stuff you can get on XMBC. Yes.

ddr 02-08-2012 12:41 AM

what are the advantages of JB-ATV over other offerings?

Hehe 02-08-2012 06:32 AM

Mainly you could install XBMC, that's the major thing for me.

Then you have all sort of plugins for XBMC to watch content at will. But the latest raid on storages like MU, it's kinda sorting thing out. I would wait a bit until things clears up.

If you want to test out XBMC, it's also available in both PC/Mac platform.

TheNewGirl 02-08-2012 08:05 AM

We got it for my parents mostly because they wanted Netflix but didn't want a PS3 or XBox. It works really well for them, they watch Netflix, and stream music on it constantly, we've got their sharing network set up as well so they can pull stuff off their pc and watch it on the TV.

Like all apple products your return on it is greater the more apple and itunes usage you have. My folks don't like to torrent so they buy things on itunes all the time, and the whole Apple TV gives them access to TV shows and stuff (particularly UK series) that they don't get on their regular TV package.

can you not do xbmc on other media players with some hacking? i'm sure the ATV works wonderful that way but if other players can run xbmc, the ATV should have superior parts to justify the cost.

StylinRed 02-08-2012 11:12 AM

hdmi cable from computer/laptop to tv would be far better no? or hdmi from ipad to tv

mos_skeeto 02-08-2012 11:44 AM

I love my apple tv but I also OCD over video/music iTunes management. I download my stuff off Bit Torrent/Newsgroups and convert them via handbrake. The disadvantage is this is a pain in the ass. The advantage is it all integrates nicely with my iDevices and I can stream it to a nice user interface ala apple tv. But the suggestions in posts above like xbmc or a hard-drive based media player (ex: wdtv) is better for most people. One non-advertised feature is playing iPad2 boardgames on the TV! So fun.

For family members looking for something to replace blockbuster video and have no downloading knowledge, apple tv is great for rentals. Netflix is also very slick.

Have an old computer laying around? Install some codecs and run Windows Media Center... good idea to buy a MCE remote too... It'll play everything.

Mine is hooked up with a DVI to HDMI cable for 1080p and digital coax to the receiver for 5.1 DD and DTS. You can even get a case to make it fit in with the rest of your home theater stuff.

nns 02-08-2012 05:52 PM

Or, you could just buy a Boxee Box.

GLOW 02-08-2012 06:52 PM

boxee box by dlink costs double apple tv though. i bought logitech's google tv because of the keyboard/web browsing abilities. and it runs netflix too

Vale46Rossi 02-08-2012 07:49 PM

I personally really like it.... mine is connected at my girlfriends apartment to her TV

I stream movies to it from my laptop (have to convert but I do that for my ipad anyways)

I dont have to run around plugging and unplugging an HDMI cable.

I love the feature where if you have 2 or 3 you can stream music to all of your TV's and they play at the same time!

Awwwww yeah I love that feature. I get to enjoy my music/movie wherever I go in the house. Such a gimmick to most but I love that shit.
