cool, I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking, but if its pretty good, I now have a sushi staple, and a pizza staple near my house. On its way to feeling like home finally.

Anyone know which Japanese restaurants offers more exotic fish on their menus?

abdulclamwacker 02-25-2012 09:17 PM

Honestly before "made in japan" was quite the norm, but after the earthquakes.. I'm really looking for local fish.

As we already know this seafood stuff is already going extinct - hopefully not within my kids lifetime.. this earthquake just really sped it up.. and I know as good as it tastes when going down.. I just don't want to risk anything in 30 years..

Does not fit the category of "fine sushi" to most people in this thread. :D

Sushi Oyama is probably the only decent one in that area.

In my own personal opinion, I have found The Eatery to be complete garbage. I've been there a couple years ago, never to return.

First of all the dark night club lighting doesn't help one to see what poorly made rolls you just ordered. All of the food wasn't anything special or good. Why the hell is it so expensive? Because stupid kids are willing to pay that much for it.

The music was so loud that it made it difficult to have any sort of conversation. The walls were littered with all sorts of garbage decorations and the menus had "Miso Horny" on the front covers.

What a stupid restaurant.

On Sunday night we went to Applause on Oak St and found the fish to be of very good quality. The food was a bit higher priced than your average run of the mill sushi restaurant, but still affordable and worthwhile.

The Eatery sucks, don't go there. It's dark as fuck in there and the music is as loud as a club, you can't even have a conversation there without yelling. The food sucks too, rolls tasted meh and the beef was as hard as a rock for their beef yaki udon.

unit 03-07-2012 03:50 PM

i hate the eatery as well. i guess it was ok when i was 19 and i thought ruining my hearing was cool, and crappy food was decent.

miss_crayon 03-07-2012 04:58 PM

The eatery is only good for the environment (cool decor etc)..food on the other hand...lets not even go there.

xmisstrinh 03-07-2012 06:44 PM

i like the avocado tempura at the eatery since nowhere else has deep fried avocado with unagi sauce and mayo... mmmm....

I don't mind Ocean West Coast Bistro on Granville and Zipang on Main when I'm in Vancouver.
further out, I Love Sushi on Schoolhouse in Coq.

I don't consider myself a connoisseur or anything so go easy :(

Truenosan 03-13-2012 08:13 PM

Hitoe Sushi. I go there quite a bit. Nice, small place, and the food is delicious.

boomervan 03-13-2012 09:26 PM

There is Vanya and Shiosai. The former serves cooked foods, too. The latter is more of a take out place and it's cheap.

Both Japanese operated.

Supafly 03-14-2012 08:50 AM

Im surprised that Octopus Garden has not been mentioned.

the_law82 03-14-2012 10:14 AM

Torarenboe in Richmond.

Operated by a lot of Chinese people but the owner is Japanese and still works as one of the sushi chefs.

Make sure you reserve a table before hand because they often turn away walk-ins due to being fully booked.
