Telus Optik TV

Didn't see a topic on this, so thought I'd make one.

Anyone coming off shaw to telus tv like I am? I've noticed that the audio is incredibly faint compared to shaw and that I'm jacking it up on my receiver almost to the max at times....

Other thoughts:
- wayyyy better than when I tried it 2 or whatever years ago.
- The UI beats the crap outta shaw's outdated guide/pvr interface, but it does slow down just like Shaw's.
- remote is nice
- image quality seems to be on par with shaw, though there seems to be random flickers of service loss, which barely happened with shaw...
- The PVR is quiet... unlike my old Pace pvr ( I realize that a lot of my shaw issues arise from owning a Pace pvr)

Anyways, anyone able to compare it to Bell's service?

I think skyxx mentioned somewhere he tried Shaw, Bell and now Telus. (Or Bell and Telus.) Hopefully he chimes in.

Fuhrėr-Z 02-14-2012 12:53 AM

Hope to hear from him, how about you?

I went from Shaw to Telus, but this was WAAAY before the whole digital optic fibre lighting high speed marketing mumbo jumbo stuff was out.

I switched from Shaw to Telus (at the time) due to several reasons:

1. Only Shaw was available in our area. This was also before they upgraded their network infrastructure so internet speeds were slow and their television rates were expensive
2. I managed to switch to Telus because I worked for them at the time. I ported my number over and they found a free port for me.
3. I got their television package prior to the commercial launch.

I left Telus and went back to Shaw for cable TV (Telus TV was not commercially available.) Later on when Telus TV was available to the public, I switched back. It's a heck of a lot better now compared to way-back-when. And in a nut shell, you summed up pretty much all the pros and cons.

I don't have any real complaints over Telus TV. It works fine for me and I am no videophile and the price point works within my budget. :)

1. telus now uses fiber optics thus the optik tv name
2. shaw is coming out with a new UI soon, last i heard theyre in teh process of testing it

Honestly? Bell's television service is a lot better than Shaw and Telus'. They have by far the best PQ in HD and SD feeds. The UI is a lot smoother and faster to use. I found that the Telus box is sluggish and "dated". I can't really complain since the Telus box is dirt cheap compared to Bell's. It's running on "ancient" Cisco hardware with really old windows media center OS. Heck, it doesn't even do HDMI handshake properly. Best to run component wires to your tv. There has been talks about Telus replacing all their set top boxes to top notch hardware, but that has been rumoured for a while.

As for you having flickering/signal lost? Check that the cables/connection that run from the modem to the TV are tight and not loose. I have't had any signal lost or anything really. The service has been pretty reliable.

Sure, Bell's service is great (Not customer service), but you pay for what you get. I ain't gonna overpay for my TV service. I don't even watch that much TV and Telus offers most channels that Bell offers. I'm happy with Telus' package bundle. My wallet's definitely a lot happier. I can trade off top notch PQ for having more money in my wallet.

Speak of the devil himself... :hotbaby:

InvisibleSoul 02-14-2012 10:16 AM

Just in case you didn't know, there is volume control on the Telus set top box itself, so you could try cranking that up first.

Pooface55 02-14-2012 10:56 AM

Moved from shaw to telus about 2 months ago. Very happy. Had some technical problems from shaw where they would keep sending a tech out. Techs solved the problem but issue would come up again a month later. Shaw phone wait times are ridiculous.

Things I like about Telus
1)Customer service rep within 5minutes of being on hold
2)3 Tuners
3)Remote recording from smartphone

I was gonna switch over to Telus optik but held off due to them only offering 15mbps by our area.. I don't think I can live with watching my sports in standard def. downstairs while the wife is watching something in HD upstairs LOL and vice versa so I stuck with Shaw and the gateway system :)

Out of curiousity.. how much do you guys pay for your Telus bill?

Pooface55 02-14-2012 11:37 AM

$38 for tv and $15 for internet. But after 6 months it should go to $50 and 44 respectively.

Ran down to find it after reading your post, couldn't find anything like that...just have menu / directional pad on the front of the box...

AHH! That's something I totally forgot to mention, the android telus app I downloaded is pretty neat, slow as fuck, but still a great feature... It's made me tv obsessed in a way, I'll be out and if I'm bored, I just randomly start "channel surfing" on my phone...On the topic of telus apps, even though I haven't ever used it, the VOD selection for the phone is pretty slim...

Just had to add, as this thread has been pretty pro telus, and we all know this isn't very accurate as Telus is a fucking gong show just like all the other companies... But they tried to pull some fucking sneaky shit on me- after about 2 months, "somehow", phone service was added onto my bill, when I wasn't even receiving those services from Telus...And this is after 2 months of just internet/tv, which I ordered, "somehow" phone service magically started appearing on my bill... Called in, easily got cleared up, but still...Sneaky motherfuckers...

skyxx 02-14-2012 01:27 PM

^ Never do pre-authorized payments. Check the bill on a monthly basis. You'll be worry free if you've done all those steps.

I don't mean to come off as thinking you're dumb or stupid but I think he meant to go through the menu as in using the remote control. There is an option somewhere within the menus to adjust your audio volume.

Fuhrėr-Z 02-14-2012 02:15 PM

^ O, must have misunderstood, I've already amped up the the volume through the menu anyway. Have you noticed that Telus TV is more quiet than shaw though?

@ skyxx, yeah, I don't do pre-auth with them anymore. Not after that for sure.

OptikTV the name is not because it's fed off of fiber. Don't spread misinformation. OptikTV in many areas are fed over copper wiring at the last mile. Brand new developments may have fiber to the home, but not in your typical Vancouver special.

"OptikTV" the name is purposely misleading, to fool consumers into thinking they're using one thing when they're really using something else.

3 tuners should not be considered a pro, lol. That's 3 tuners for all your STBs. Even a vanilla Motorola PVR has 2 tuners.

Gh0stRider 02-14-2012 09:52 PM

optik not available in my area... :fuuuuu:

Thank god this is clarified, lots of fools around who think Optik = Optic Fiber.

TypeRNammer 02-14-2012 10:57 PM

Was paying a retarded amount when I was with shaw.

High Speed Internet and Home phone for 70 bucks tax in :fuuuuu:

I switched over to Telus for their "Optik" Speed Internet, Home phone, and "Optik" TV for 30 bucks a month before tax, for one year.

Groot 02-14-2012 11:16 PM

do your guy's tv screen randomly turn from full screen to a rectangular screen? then it goes back to normal when you turn the receiver off and back on? lol

DC5-S 02-15-2012 12:11 AM

my optik TV is fucked.. get "TV signal lost" quite often and loosing connection to pvr often as well which stops me from seeing recordings.. Had a tech come down 3 times.. He replaced all the boxes but same shit
