Business Internet providers

Does anyone know of any ISP that can provide a steady 20/20 connection or more?

So far i have contacted Radiant and they can not provide the connection. I am in contact with Terago right now and waiting for their response. Shaw can not as their best is 100/5 for the burnaby area.

InvisibleSoul 02-17-2012 02:37 PM

AllStream may have a solution for you... certainly won't be cheap though.

lilaznviper 02-17-2012 02:52 PM

price is not a problem as we are currently paying almost 1k for internet a month. Will take a look at them.

skholla 02-17-2012 03:27 PM

Check out Terago and Radiant. I previously had a 20/20 from Metrobridge (before they were bought by Terago), cost was almost $2k a month in 2008.

LoL, did you even read his second sentence?

skholla 02-17-2012 05:25 PM

These aren't your home grade cable or adsl home connections and can slow down or cut out without notice, compensation, or breach of contract. You pay top dollar for guaranteed/symmetrical bandwidth, 99.9% uptime, secure/private connection, redundancy. Prices have come down since 2008 but this depends on the solution (microwave, fibre optic, ethernet) and speed (some offer up to 1Gb). Radiant currently has a 20/20 with unlimited traffic for $1200, but I don't think they offer faster connections like Terago does.

all 3 telco's (bell/telus/allstream) can provide that over fiber, but could be pricey depending on location, definitly more than 1k/month.

Do you mind sharing what sort of usage you actually have for wanting a symmetrical line?

The company I worked for back in 2007/2008 was paying big bucks for a 45/45 from allstream, and one day, we switched to a co-lo in a Seattle-based DC and moved all the data intensive connection over there while getting a business line from shaw.

We ended up saving about 35% of internet cost while having faster speed (our colo were on dual gigE connections for the max burst) and with physical access when needed too.

And more and more company that I know of are moving their BW intensive stuff into DC or services like Amazon S3/Google storage.

What I want to say is, in case you can't really find what you want, it might not be a bad idea to start thinking about an overhaul.

lilaznviper 02-17-2012 11:57 PM

The company wants all their data local. They feel more safe so I can't off load any data.

There are a lot of sites that have VPN connections connected to the main office and a ton of remote users. There are 2 terminal servers, sharepoint server and email server which are the main ones that are taking up all the bandwidth. right now during working hours the internet will slow to a crawl and people at the main office are complaining of slow net as well as remote users complaining about how slow it is when using the terminal servers.

I talked to shaw's higher up people and they said they can put in a fibre gateway in the building at an expensive installation cost so we might have to go this route if i can't find any other providers that will have a cheaper installation cost and monthly cost

gars 02-18-2012 12:40 AM

Our company had Telus drop fiber into our building to get a 10/10 line - but it's can be upgraded to 20/20 if we wanted, (or probably higher)

I can't remember how much we paid for it though.

I'm not a network expert, but from your usage, I think your company might be better off keeping the current setup and create a mirror server on a colo location with load balancing?

This way, you have best reliability (if one side dies, the other takes over, not to mention you always want to keep crucial files in two separate location) and best performance.

But again, it depends on the content that you have. Try talking with Telus/Shaw/Allstream... and see if you can work out a deal with going with an agreement in terms to avoid huge upfront cost.

Sorry for bump! Have a question!

Our company currently uses Shaw Business Extreme (or whatever the new name is) which we're happy with for 80 bucks a month (we're a small business), bundled with shaw phone service (6 lines at 40/each + LD).

We're moving locations from one side of Richmond to another location where Shaw doesn't have service. I spoke with the tenants that share the same building and they use some sophisticated TeraGo service. I was wondering if they provide comparable prices or ?

Planning to pay 100/month max. We run our own Exchange server and Domain, if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Hehe 03-26-2012 02:36 AM

I don't think anything from Terago is anywhere near $100/m... :fuckthatshit:

Last time I came across basic pricing, Terago had 3/3 line for around $450 a month plus taxes.

You might want to check with Telus or resellers like Teksavvy to see if they have anything for you. I think Radiant also do something in that range. You can check them out.

One thing to note though, it's for less than 100/m, you won't get very much upstream speed

Harvey Specter 03-26-2012 04:05 AM

Yup, we're using TeraGo in Toronto for our tv channel to broadcast a daily live feed and the cost for a 2mb connection was $600/month, 3 year term. Your best bet would be Shaw.

nns 03-26-2012 10:47 AM

What exactly do you get for that much money? Must be some godly routes and peering. SLA includes a clause where they'll give you free organ transplants?

jackmeister 03-26-2012 10:51 AM

I have to settle with TELUS :okay: extra 150/month for comparable service :heckno:
-Spoke with Shaw, they will probably look into upgrading that area soon :fuckyea:
-Called TeraGo, Canadian company with a Texas call center. The cheapest they have is 1.5/1.5 at 190/month for internet only. voice extra.

Probably guaranteed minimum downtime, speeds, fast tech support, etc.

lilaznviper 03-26-2012 01:40 PM

I spoke with terago a month ago and pretty much they have a 99.999% redundancy in their network and a 3 hour mean time to repair which is the best compare to the rest of the internet providers. You pay to have your internet up always running if your business is really important, need email to be always working if you have your own email server etc. as well as you pay to get that upload speed that regular providers shaw and telus can't give you. well... atleast not at a reasonable rate like terago.

last time I talked to shaw they wanted 1.8k for a 20/20 line + crazy install fee of the fibre:heckno:

InvisibleSoul 03-26-2012 01:48 PM

So did AllStream have anything to offer?

We have a gigabit line from AllStream.

lilaznviper 03-26-2012 02:28 PM

AllStream gave us a pricing which the higher ups didn't really like compared to what terago has offered us.

Right now as we are still in take with terago and a couple other ISP, i'm just load balancing some traffic using a shaw business 100 line to easy some traffic off of the main line.

InvisibleSoul 03-26-2012 02:35 PM

I told you AllStream wouldn't be cheap.

jackmeister 03-26-2012 04:21 PM

Allstream? They're by far the worst ISP/Phone company for small business. I notice you guys are all looking for enterprise solutions. $$$$$$$$

Rogers used to have a fibre network here but I heard they sold it?

+1.

We need to keep speeds at around 1.5mb/s for SD quality.

I read in an article that they decided to concentrate on building a larger fibre network and to strictly limit their sales to new customers. I believe they stopped marketing and sales and only cater to their existing customers from what I understand.

What they did, on the flip side, is sell their residential/business wireline business to Primus.
