brakes acting up
 

hey everyone. last month i changed my pads and rotors because my 92 EG was making crunching noises as i braked.my steering wheel also crazy vibrating when braking. now that i changed both rotors and pads i am getting the same symptoms as before :(

what else could be causing these issues. i feel like the vibrating is worse now than it was prior to the new brake parts. i checked all the parts and made sure nothing was loose and no luck.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Did you check to see if your old rotors are really warped before you switch to new parts? or you just threw in new parts hoping it would solve the problem?

Crunching noises could be your callipers that are sticking?

When you brake, there are weight transfer, the vibration could also be your suspension bushings along to out of true discs.

Check bearings for play. Jack car, put it on jack stands and test for play by pushing on the upper and lower sidewalls of the tire and it should not move, To test your tie rods try to wiggle the tire left and right. And test your ball joints for play try to apply slight pressure to see if you can get them to separate a bit, if you can they are shot.

actually now that you do mention it when i did notice that my brake pads were wearing down evenly.at the time i didnt think anything of it.dammit.

as for the other response ill check on that sometime this week.

why would the steering wheel vibrate like crazy only when braking if it was a bearing?

I think the others said bearings are the source of your "crunching" noise.

Honestly, measure and get a good sense of your car's situation eg thickness of rotors and pads.. any play on parts etc.. before you throw new parts in are useful and save you money on the long run.

Yes bearings can make crunching and other odd noises as they get bad - really bad

wheel bearings tend to make a constant growl noise that gets louder with speed. I cant' recall any wheel bearings make crunching noises when braking. Oddly enough, I did have a front wheel bearing noise today where the growling noise got a little worse while braking. As the brakes were applied the weight would shift forward adding more load on the front bearings.

My guess is the crunching noise is from the front brakes or more specifically the rotors. Maybe a heat spot on them or they're badly warped. (would also explain the steering wheel shake)
1 question, does the crunch noise happen when the brakes are cold (car sitting for a while) or after they're warmed up a bit?
Try jacking the front of the car up. take off the front wheels and put in in first gear. Watch carefully the rotor to see if its straight. Use the pads or caliper visually as a reference point. Try not to get your fingers caught, that would hurt.

I can think of many cases where a customer had complained of a crunching or creaking noise while braking/slowing down and ended up being rotors. Either badly warped or a hard or heat spot

I just thought of something....i remember years back a new 04 accord was making crunching/creaking noises while braking. I machined the rotors with an on car brake lathe and still one of the rotors was warped. Strange because with on car lathes, its almost fool proof to cut them straight. Ended up the hub (what the rotor is mounted on) was warped so ended up replacing the hub and bearing. Good thing it was under warrenty

^ i doubt it could be warped rotors and messed up brake pads as i just changed them...i still havent had a chance to jack up the car and do the bearing and tie rod test as the other members suggested. to answer ure q: the crunching noise can be heard at all times regardless of whether the car is hot or cold.

i dont know if this is anything related but when turning the wheel in either direction there used to be a squeaking noise.could whatever was causing that noise be broken or really messed up hence my steering wheel vibrating?

Squeaking when turning... steering wheel vibrations when braking. If it's not your rotors, it's your tie rods/ball joints.

Check it out ASAP before it falls apart. You're regret it if it falls apart while driving, trust me.
