True or False ? Racism in Fort McMurray Been hearing a lot of good and bad working in For McMurray...I dont care about the weather, boring life or long shift work. Only thing that concern me is I heard some stories about racism in Fort McMurray. I dont know the truth behind this so can anyone share some info ? I'm Asian (Chinese) background. The stories that I heard is they usually giving hard time to non-Caucasian individual, sometimes the same treatment is also given to Caucasian that is from other countries even other provinces. |
Of course there will be racism, and prejudice out there. It's all about having a stiff upper lip and being able to dish/take shit. I came from working on the waterfront handing 50-yr old crews to do maintenance work. You think they wouldn't be cracking jokes about asians/east indians/white/black? You have to be able to take some shit, and dish it right back out. I felt comfortable as hell shooting the shit with these guys, and making jokes at each others expense all day. Now on the other side of the fence, if it got to be a little extreme (i.e. hate crimes, bashing your windows, bashing your face in) then I could see that being a problem. I've never had to deal with that type of friction before, I guess it depends on the type of person you are. If you take everything personally, I wouldn't suggest that you work around older individuals in any trades. |
^ well, simple jokes and there is fine i was afraid of it being too extreme .... such has hate crime like you mentioned |
Don't worry. If you can take 4 billion+ fails on RS, you will be able to withstand any challenges in real life. |
They give white (Canadian) guys just as hard of a time. Don't get why an Asian, East Indian, German, etc should get any different treatment just to spare their feelings. I don't consider it racism if you're a dick to everyone haha. |
Don't expect the same multiculturalism as you do in Vancouver. Vancouver is extremely open, but go for a drive out to Mission or the Interior and see how it is, don't get too used to the freedom. Just being real here |
I'm sorry but this is a retarded thread, there is no racism in Ft Mac.. (None more so than any other part of Canada) there is however the reality that if you have communication problems related to your ethnicity and accent (If you are ESL for instance) you can expect a lower rate of pay. There is more non-white people in Ft Mac than there is white people.. at least thats how it appears to me. Consider that most of the companies operating in Ft. Mac are major construction and engineering companies, pretty sure they all have zero tolerance policies for shit like racism. Now having said all that, I can't STAND NEWFIES!!!!!! But for real, no racism... just language barrier... if your english sucks you can expect your pay to suck, there is thousands of foreign workers trying to get in here all the time and the reason companies don't hire more of them is because communication is such an issue.. also why so many of the Engineers are from India... the one benefit of Brittish Colonialism.. they all speak very good English :) |
Lol, I agree with Jason 100%. Hate crimes? Really? |
Hi, I saw this thread a few days ago and I thought I'd contribute. One of my old high school friends came from Ft.McMurray and I actually went to a birthday dinner with him last night, hence why I'm posting today. He said there wasn't much racism at all there, however it's not as multicultural as it was then (4 years ago). I guess that's because his whole family speaks english fluently though. |
I know asian guys that work out there. If you're easily offended then it's not your cup of tea. People will rag on you and throw chinese jokes at you, but if you have thick skin and can dish it back you're all good. Basically hanging with rednecks, the shop here is full of rednecks and they always crack asian jokes. But it doesn't bug me personally and I'm not easily offended. I don't think they'll hang you on a noose. |
