Computer won't turn on, it's not the PS

My computer suddenly won't turn on anymore. I've tested the power supply on another computer and it works fine. Right now, the ONLY thing connected is the PS to the motherboard. It turns on (fans spin, etc) for a brief moment, then everything shuts off again.

I noticed the following on my motherboard:

Is it time to buy a new motherboard? I think this is 6+ years old...

Hmm, it does look like bad caps, which was a major problem from around that time.

You could test another power supply with that motherboard, but I would say it's time for a new motherboard.

I had the same issue. On some mobo's there is a thermal sensor. If that fails it will prevent it from powering up.

ya i would toss that board..

those EVGA's are know to blow caps.. is that the Socket 939 one?

Yep, it's a socket 939...

Try removing the battery on the mobo before you toss it.

Although I suspect the caps just went kaput, sometimes the BIOS/sensors can get fuck'd up and doesn't pass the boot sequence... by removing the battery, the entire CMOS gets back to factory.

no lifetime warranty? or only VGA cards?

FerrariEnzo 03-09-2012 01:23 PM

i wouldnt use that anymore, it would possible damage other parts if you try to keep using it..

Wow those are solid caps too. The bad caps issue was around 8-9 years ago but didn't affect the leaking ones u have there. But it does look like the regular caps to the left of them are bulging as well but I can't quite tell from your pic.

At this point. Do not bother testing anything else or continue use. Replace the board now.

+ 1 for getting new board

they're so disposable these days.. (technology that is)

dunno if that's a good thing or a bad thing..

Well, getting a S939 board is gonna be hard to find, and expensive.

Might as well buy a modern mobo & processor - might be cheaper! :)

Yeah. Consider this a chance to upgrade.

asian_XL 03-10-2012 04:21 PM

agree...even the cheapest H61 + GXXX celeron will be a big performance upgrade.
