Sorry, but that's the worst example you could give. There's a reason drug dealers are called "pushers" - it's because they actively seek to recruit "new users" of their products.

You look around and see places like the DTES and assume that there's a customer base and someone has to fill it (the old "get rid of one dealer and another takes his place"). What you don't realize is these areas are "developed" and "created" by the drug dealers. You don't see it because you think "it's always been there".

Drug dealers/gangs move into new territories and create a market where none existed before. They are not content with simply "supplying the existing user base" - they want more customers.

I think it's disheartening to see pieces of shit get glorified. The police and others are trying to find ways to discourage youth from getting into gang life. They say youth are attracted by the idea of getting quick and easy money. I say that's only half of it. To a lot of people, a gang member is someone considered "cool". People flock to clubs they know are run by gangs or are known gang hangouts. They think it's cool to be able to tell people they know so-and-so from some gang or that they have a "hook up". And gang members eat this shit up.

Society should think of gang members for what they really are: The lowest fucking scum in the world. Parasites who will do anything to anyone as long as they can further themselves.
