Glad to hear things went well araadi.

Another job well done.

Reviving this thread, so since I got my coilovers installed they has been a rattling sound, it was very minor. Just last night it has been very loud and sounds like its been coming from the front two suspension. The shop i got it installed at is busy till sometime next week. Anyone with experience think they can offer a hand on finding the source of the rattle?

Jin 04-21-2012 11:17 AM

easiest thing to check, would be the nuts on top of each coilover. sometimes the nut isnt tight from factory and it loosens itself over time. its happened to me before. I think its a 14mm for most coils.

Raid3n 04-21-2012 02:23 PM

ya, check all the bolts are tight, check to see if the spring is loose in the seat as well.

I bought some wrenches at walmart, they seemed pretty snug already, but I went ahead and tightened them a little more. It seems to be quieter. Heres some pics of the set up.

Relp, the rattle is still there. Not quite sure on what it could be. I hope i don't have to go back to stock =(

GabAlmighty 04-23-2012 07:16 AM

If I tried to source every rattle/clunk/noise in my cars... I'd never get anything done haha.

Yea but for a brand new car with the only mod being coilovers, it shouldn't rattle like how it is. I found a guy with a similar problem, but mine doesn't sound as extreme as his.

falcon 04-23-2012 11:10 AM

Wheel bearing. or steering rack is loose. a friend of mine races the same civic you have at mission and and autoX and his steering rack clunks like that. Not sure what he did to fix it.

Duff Beer 04-23-2012 10:13 PM

Are you sure it's coming from the suspension, not brakes? I had my past Accord's brakes making metal-to-metal noise

Araaadi 05-07-2012 09:01 AM

UPDATE: So the source of the rattle is from the top nut, like suggested here. I keep on tightening the top nut to the best of my ability, but a day or so later it's loose and the rattle starts again. Anyone know how to fix it permanently?

fliptuner 05-07-2012 09:07 AM

top nut as in for the top of the strut?

does it have a lock washer under it?

dru 05-07-2012 09:09 AM

You can always screw another nut on if there is room at the top, or you can use blue locktite?

fliptuner 05-07-2012 09:16 AM

Was going to suggest double-nutting it but I doubt there's access to the lower one when he wants to take it off and it's going to be a pita.

who did the install for you? why not take it back there?

also what coils are those? (they look like buddy clubs?) do these use the stock top hat, or did it come with them already pre-assembled?

an option could be to loctite them, but I would recommend getting them checked out by the shop that did the install first before you proceed if you wanna go that method.

Most often that would be a result of not applying adequate torque.

Yea top of the strut, and yea there is a washer under it.

I got the shop who installed it for me to check it out a few weeks ago. They believed it was just the noises from the coil-overs. I am thinking of trying to double nut it today before my drive up to whistler. Is it okay for me to remove the original nut and replace it ? As of now when ever I tighten it, I would get like 2 days or silence then back to the rattle. Getting very irritated.

lowside67 05-11-2012 05:58 AM

I would replace the nut with an equally sized nylock nut. With a new nylock nut there should be no reason to use loc-tite although a few drops of blue would help guarantee that thing would never unintentionally come off without making it impossible to ever remove. And that nut should be installed with a torque wrench to the recommended setting, not just to how tight you "think" it should be!

FYI you can pick up those nuts at home depot in the hardware section. I was just there yesterday. I think it was 80 odd cents or something like that.

lowside67 05-11-2012 06:55 AM

Highly depends on the size, and I guarantee not a high quality grade either. You are in Burnaby, you should be going to:

Pacific Fasteners
3934 E 1st. Ave
Burnaby, BC

(604) 294-9411

Make sure to take your old nut in with you.

The "Blue" I referred to is Loctite Blue which is the medium strength. If you put the red (max strength) on you run the risk of not being able to get them off again.

The torque spec when you install these nuts is KEY though so look it up and use a good torque wrench!

Araaadi 05-11-2012 07:09 AM

okay thanks a lot. Ill run and grab the nuts now and install them when i get a proper torque wrench.

Araaadi 05-11-2012 09:50 AM

pacific fastners didn't have my size apprently its 9/16 insidee and 19mm out

It seems SUPER unlikely that it is a standard (imperial) bolt that has a metric outer size. I would bet money that it is a Metric bolt, inside and out.
