I've been in a case where I'm waiting to turn left and the light just turned red and there was a lady in a van in oncoming traffic still coming, so I didn't go and sure enough, she ran the light and was oblivious to it cause when I honked, she honked back and fingered me. She was on the phone and didn't know she ran a red, or else she just thinks she has the right to do what she wants cause her vehicle was bigger.

sebberry 03-29-2012 09:15 AM

And that's why I'm generally opposed to the use of phones by the driver of a moving vehicle.

Fuhrėr-Z 03-31-2012 09:55 AM

Voice to text/ voice command systems need to really advance...That's the only way we'll really see people stop using cell phones in their cars...I use Vlingo and it partially gets the job done, but I find when it doesn't cooperate with me, I become more distracted than when I would be just holding my phone.

moomooCow 03-31-2012 04:27 PM

I find cellphone laws a silly attempt to control dangerous drivers. The ones who are on their cellphones and missing green lights and just driving dangerously are generally the same people who day dream while driving. These people just lack the insight into how severe the consequences could be. What's needed is better driver education, and not bandaid solutions in banning cellphones and devices. Those that lack the driving education will still find something different to be distracted by.

The whole situation is akin to the teacher telling little Johnny to sit straight and face forward with his hands on his desk. He still isn't pay attention, no matter how much of the distractions you remove. We have to stop focusing on the objects and start on changing the mindset of people.

wing_woo 04-03-2012 11:28 AM

Or some people just don't understand how to drive. I was driving on Kingsway and some idiot decides to turn left onto Boundary in front of me. Slammed on my brakes and just narrowly avoided the collision. The dick then comes out screaming at me to look at the light and I'm like wondering what's there to look at? It's freakin green! I was with my kid so I just backed up cause after all that happened, the light started changing.

I agree with you 100%....however, the idiots who are the problem and are a danger to themselves and others (usually evidenced by their lousy distracted driving) know that they are not the problem, they are not doing anything dangerous. You can't change their mindset because their minds are slammed closed.

So while the people who need to change won't, the rest of us who can manage just fine on our own are the ones who get picked on by Johnny Law.

Three days ago there were 4 SPD/IRSU cars lined up on the on-ramp catching speeders, and just a few blocks away people were blasting through the school zone at 50kph+ with children out playing.

Welcome to Western society. Pretty much all of our laws operate on this basis. Either deal with it, or move to a country where you can buy your own justice.

Fishing holes =/= sensible enforcement.

I think speeding through a school zone shows a bigger disregard for safety than 20 over on the freeway.

zulutango 04-07-2012 04:57 PM

So the speeders in school zones....should we "educate" them or ticket them? :)
Alomst every speeder I ever ticketed in a school zone was a parent of a child who attended that particular school. Only exception was a van with 4 occupants. Driver was more than 60 k over the limit. 4 teachers from the next school down the road.
Education in all meanings of the word, is obviously wasted on these types and the parents. Funny thing about the parents...reason enforcement was being done was because the PAC and the parents called the Cops to complain about the speeding cars endangering their kids in the school zones they were speeding thru themselves.

So a school zone wouldn't be considered a "fishing hole" even though they could easily keep busy writing tickets for a full 8-hour shift in one?

sebberry 04-07-2012 09:31 PM

I have no problem with speed enforcement in school zones, playground zones or work zones where workers are present.

TypeRNammer 04-07-2012 09:42 PM

LOL CBC just had a news bit on another crack down on drivers, this time the undercover was an easter bunny!

As if that wasn't a distraction for drivers.

And yet these would all fit the textbook definition of fishing holes... double standard much?

sebberry 04-07-2012 10:11 PM

I define a fishing hole as a location where it is easy to catch speeders because they can speed easily and safely in that location.

Soundy 04-08-2012 06:36 AM

Ah, I see, so it's YOUR definition of "safely" that makes all the difference.

Double-standard much?

zulutango 04-08-2012 02:53 PM

Not double standard.....HIS standard. Major difference. :rukidding:
