A friend of mine gave me his lip for his STi that he didn't want anymore, and I made new rear valences for my car from it. http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...slkippcfr.jpeg http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...pseoy2skpp.jpg Looks almost like it was meant to fit haha. |

I decided to change the spark plugs as preventative maintenance since I do not know when they were changed last (if ever). I did some research and the guys on clublexus said it was a piece of cake. I have never done a spark plug job before and boy was I in for a bit of a surprise. I also decided to clean out the MAF and throttle body, since I was in there anyways. <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280901.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280901.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280901.jpg"/></a> MAF unit taken out from airbox <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280800.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280800.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280800.jpg"/></a> Doesn't look so bad at all. Didn't put an after picture because it quite honestly looked the same. <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280700.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280700.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280700.jpg"/></a> Airbox could use a vacuum. <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280600.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280600.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280600.jpg"/></a> Boom <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021421043700.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021421043700.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021421043700.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280500.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280500.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280500.jpg"/></a> What we were dealing with <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280401.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280401.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280401.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280301.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280301.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280301.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280300.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280300.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280300.jpg"/></a> (PS I used carb cleaner with some shop towels for the job) As I was cleaning the throttle body valve I noticed that there was a thin layer of oil inside the throttle body. Decided it would be fun to crack open the bad boy and take a look. <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280201.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280201.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280201.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021421043900.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021421043900.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021421043900.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280200.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280200.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280200.jpg"/></a> Wiped up most of it. The spark plugs on the driver's side were a PITA. The first plug I tried to pull out had the spark plug boot seized to the wall. I ended up ripping the boot a little bit trying to extract the damn thing! <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021421043800.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021421043800.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021421043800.jpg"/></a> First one out. **** was toast. <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280100.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280100.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280100.jpg"/></a> Plug #3 was particularly dirty. The socket hole had some crud around it and it took some ingenuity to figure out a good solution due to the clearance issues. I whipped out the dental picks to dry and scrape some of the crud out but it wasn't effective. <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280001.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400280001.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400280001.jpg"/></a> What I ended up doing was taking an extension, tieing a small piece of shop towel via elastic band, and spraying some carb cleaner to the said shop towel. The results were pretty good! <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400275900.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/2016021400275900.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2016021400275900.jpg"/></a> After a few more hours of pulling, bending and yelling, here are all the damn plugs out. <a href="http://s13.photobucket.com/user/clintdaddy/media/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/54e62bff-1a7c-4985-881c-0501bea7a938.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a281/clintdaddy/Lexi/Spark%20Plugs%20TB%20and%20MAF/54e62bff-1a7c-4985-881c-0501bea7a938.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 54e62bff-1a7c-4985-881c-0501bea7a938.jpg"/></a> These mofos were SHOT. After the plugs were all pulled out and replaced, I fired up the car and it started ok. When I drove it the next day, I noticed the idle was quite high, around 1400 rpm vs. the usual 700 rpm once warmed up. I went on Google and people suggested checking all of the vacuum hoses and the throttle cable. Everything checked out fine. At this point I was a bit nervous. I figured that since the amount of air coming into the TB was going to be a bit more, and with the introduction of new spark plugs the ECU may be simply trying to adjust to the new parts. I adopted that idea and drove the car around the block a few times and then the CEL came on. At this point I had a mini heart attack. I decided to pull the battery for 30 min so that the ECU will be reset. While I was waiting I rechecked all my connections and they were ok. Plugged the battery back up and it started up fine. Drove the car all day and no CEL and no high idle! Mission success! (knock on wood) |
^ that feel when none of the pic links are done correctly :okay: |
This weeks accomplishments... Rally Bug - Installed Blackvue camera system front and rear, all wiring hidden. Don't really 'need' one in Squamish, but my theory is if I'm ever in an accident no one is going to believe the guy in the race-beetle was driving responsibly...so I'll need it. - Completed a bumper to bumper check, and started on the list... - Inspected, cleaned and Rebuilt (where necessary) the Eberspacher Gas Heater. These have an unfairly earned reputation for being dangerous, they aren't...but do need to be maintained like any other gas-burning device. - After four years of adding this and that to the car, I finally stripped it down and cleaned up all the electrical. - Continued work on the Hydraulic clutch conversion - Pulled apart the defrost blower motor, confirmed my problem (worn bushing) is not serviceable. Repaired it as best as possible....will look for a new one. - Tore apart RR suspension, broken Kafer bar (brace) found, and repairs started. - Removed transmission mounts, swore at the designer for 3 days, finally remembered why I designed them that way and in 40min had new mounts fabricated and back in the car. - Installed new rally intercom, upgraded to an FM-120. - New Peltor military intercom headsets arrived, rewired the plugs and now my car has noise-cancelling headsets. Should be even nicer than my standard units. - Repaired worn seat bolsters - Discovered the co-driver at my last rally bent the co-driver footrest into a potato-chip. Guess he really was worried about that one section of road through the trees! The MK1 Escort Rally - Welcome to the world of nothing fits the first time... - Sorted the issues with the front brake kit. Will need to mill the brake caliper mounts down and re-drill new holes in the spindles for cotter pins. - Dropped the car on it's wheels for the first time in 6 months, started mocking up the engine and transmission install. - Trans temporary mount in place, RS engine mount fabricated and tacked in. - Cut up a bunch of car to fit the exhaust. - Sorted out driver position, started on the steering column mounts. I'll have to add photos later... -Dave |
What did you do to your vehicle today? Quote:
Probably still needs another 20 lamp hours to fully break in but they got a smidge brighter since new. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...ab114d18b1.jpg |

4 Attachment(s) Stephon at D-ride dipped my '49 this week. Did a great job tidying up the bodywork and sorting a few other problems out. |
Took off bumper to chop up for Intercooler + test fitted front summers setup before repaint, gonna drop down 10-20 in tire width. Also reloaded tune to see how bad the clutch slips. Hoping to be ready for drift day in June. http://i.imgur.com/KEK3GC5.jpg |

Fitment was on point initially which was surprising for an OEM rep lip. One thing I noticed is that after driving for a bit there's a tiny gap under the front left below the license plate which wasn't there when I installed the lip. I think i'll try getting a heatgun and remolding the lip a bit tomorrow. Any other advice rs? http://i.imgur.com/sTvEerg.jpg @Jackpot. That looks amazing. I want to do something similar to my 3 but i'm afraid of the soldering part |
Escort work this weekend: Spoiler! No photos of the beetle work. I've basically pulled the entire rear suspension of the car, checked it and rebuilt it where necessary. Interestingly enough the rear springs have settled at differing heights, but a buddy just happened to have the exact set I needed in _my_ storage unit. Yoink! Beetle is the side-project at the moment, otherwise it would have been back on the road in January. -Dave |
Dave is it a hobby or do you do all the resto/mod work as a job? |
Hobby. |
Put in these kick panels a couple weeks back with some Craigslist speakers but they ended up being blown. So I picked up some new ones and tossed them in. Looks good to me. http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...ds/image_1.jpg |
Gave the car its first waxing of the year. Still need to get around detailing the interior. http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...psxmfwqr8v.jpg http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...psxoe4t9lf.jpg |
Spoiler! Are those F tail lights? Or did you red out the amber parts? :sweetjesus: |
Black wheels on black look good. |

^That's pretty awesome. Can you do the same for the models with the tach in the middle like the GT? |
Replaced my torn factory shift boot and ebrake boot for real leather ones... R34 kit fit perfect, and I have a new leather smell in my car :fullofwin: http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...221_124448.jpg |
